Terrific find

We stayed for two nights at the Amalfi over the weekend of July 30 - August 1 while in town to see the Phillies at Wrigley Field. Stayed there on the basis of recommendations on this website, and we were not disappointed. The staff was terrifically helpful long before we arrived, making arrangements for baseball tickets, dinner and golf. When we arrived we were upgraded to a corner suite. The room was lovely, spotlessly clean, bed was large and comfortable. Outstanding service continued during our stay with "Experience Designers" (their term for a cross between the concierge and front desk clerk) helping us every step of the way. They even pulled computer directions to the golf course and left them for us without ever being asked.

Three complaints take it down to a four star, only two of which are fixable. 1) The view is not so hot even from the nicest rooms. We don't know Chicago that well, but didn't have the feeling we were seeing its best side. 2) No safe in the room. In our experience most hotels have them now at least at this level of quality. 3) The bill was misstated not once but twice. When we arrived and I was asked to initial, the reservation showed $350 per night. I pointed out it was supposed to be $350 for the weekend. They assured me it was a "computer error" and would be fixed. When we went to check out, the bill again showed $350 per night plus $35 per night for parking, even though parking was supposed to be included in the weekend special. They were quick enough and pleasant enough in making the correction, but the error shouldn't happen once, let alone twice.

Having said that, we'd definitely stay there again. The people just couldn't be nicer. Just check your bill.

Should be a 5 star hotedl

We celebrated our 24th anniversary in Chicago and stayed at the Amalfi for 5 days over July 4th. This was one of the best trips we have ever taken. From the bellman at the front door, to the reception desk, to the hosts of the managers evening reception we were treated like royalty. There is NOT one negative thing that we could write about this hotel (except that we are having Amalfitini withdrawls=) The location, breakfast, managers reception, cleanliness (we owned a B & B so we are picky) & especially staff are top notch. Our friends from Michigan came over to celebrate with us and stayed an evening as well and absolutely loved it. This is one hotel we WILL stay at again and recommend highly. Make sure you try the Amalfatini's at the managers reception. They are very addicting and the food was wonderful. Thank you for making our 24th anniversary so special.

Great boutique hotel

I just came back from one of many of my trips to Chicago and stayed at the Amalfi for the first time. The location is great, very close to many essential point of interests (including the Magnificent Mile). Price is great, amenities impressive (including free internet access) and the breakfast buffet, in the elevator lobby, very good and very convenient (with trays for you to take your breakfast in your room). Above all, is the kindness and availability of the staff - Every single individual I dealt with was helpful, enthusiastic, making you feel home - A great experience! The Amalfi is now my hotel in Chicago!

Great hotel

The Amalfi Hotel is a great boutique hotel. It used to be a hotel for airline employees during their layovers, but the hotel has re-done everything well. The location of the hotel is ideal. It is within walking distance of the Magnificient Mile and downtown. It's also across the street from Harry Caray's. The ambiance and decorations of the hotel are friendly, lively, chic, and modern. We were greeted by a very helpful concierge, who checked us in promptly, while giving us recommendations. Dozzy was awesome! He gave us good tips and helpful maps. The staff seemed genuinely interested in your stay and wanted to make sure that you were being taken care of.

The continental breakfast and happy hour are wonderful. It was a good way to meet other hotel guests, especially during the happy hour. Happy hour was awesome because you got appetizers, like marinated artichokes, roasted red peppers, olives, bread, tapenades, and cold cuts along with complimentary cocktails. For breakfast, the pastries were delightful, especially the chocolate crossiants and lemon-cranberry muffins.

The room itself was fine, a little generic, probably because it was previous airline employee hotel, but again, the interior design made up for it. There were 2 CD box sets that you could listen to music, if you wanted, although we couldn't find our CD player. That was alright because we were out and about Chicago anyway. The beds and sheets were comfortable, and the turn-down service was a plus. A Ghiradelli chocolate is placed on your pillow, and that was a nice touch. There are also cool magazines that you can read, such as InStyle, GQ, and magazine with Chicago highlights. All bath products are from Aveda, and the rosemary mint shampoo is a plus!

The only two issues are that there is no in-room safe, which most other hotels have, and parking. If you have extremely valuable things, just remember that there is not a safe. As for parking, you can pay one fee with hotel check-in, with in and out privileges or pay for public parking, without in and out privileges. If you are going for public parking, I would check to see if some parking lots accept credit cards because parking can get pricey and some lots are cash only. Parking prices are probably what you would expect from a big city.

I would definitely stay at the Amalfi Hotel again. Great location, great staff, great food and ambiance, and just great all-around.

A nice surprise

As a lifelong resident of the Chicago area, I knew the location was great, but did not know what to expect of the hotel. For those of you not familiar with Chicago, this is in the River North area which has several world class restaurants and clubs within a short walk. It surpassed our expectations.

Upon checking in, when I informed the clerk it was our anniversary, we were upgraded to a corner room. Full length windows overlooked the city from 2 directions. The room amenities were very high quality and we loved the CD's that were provided.

The complimentary manager's reception had top shelf brands in the drinks (Belvedere Vodka in the martinis and Don Julio tequila for your margarita) and the anti pasta selection was very good (including fresh baby mozzarella and a sun dried tomato spread).

The continental breakfast was fine, although the fresh fruit selection could have been better.

If you are looking for a very nice place to stay and do not need a pool or spa on the premises I would highly recommend the Amalfi.

The smaller hotel lended itself to great customer service. The staff responded to each of our requests/questions.

Exceeded our expectations!

Hidden Gem

Stayed at the Amalfi Hotel last week...this is a great place! Not at all what we expected. A small boutique type of hotel, you get the feeling like you are truly a guest. The staff is super pleasant and friendly. The rooms are a little tight, but that is due to having 2 Queen size beds in the room, which was great to have. Fine bed linen on a super comfy bed, that would be turned down in the evening with Ghiradelli chocolate on your pillow. Every morning a great continental breakfast buffet awaits on your floor (great coffee!) and in the evening, on the 6th floor, is a lounge where they serve great antipasto style nibbles and drinks, all complimentary! All the bath products were Aveda spa products which was a nice touch. Location is also very good to many restaurants. Make reservations for the Weber Grill Restaurant...this place was awesome, carnivore heaven! Found 2 drawbacks to the Amalfi: Considering this is a newly renovated hotel, the bathroom floor tile was pretty beat up already (chipped and cracked in many areas). The other thing is, they don't offer an in room safe, so beware of that if you have valuables that may need locking up. Another thing, the staff there are called "Experience Designers", and they answer the front desk phone by saying, "How may I enhance your experience?", which kind of gave a creepy, brothrel feel. All in all, a comfortable stay, in a spotless hotel, accomodating to children (they gave our kids beautiful Chicago landmark coloring books), with delicious food. We would stay here again!

Great, and wonderful Chicago location!

We were sent here by the Allegro ("due to a computer glitch they had overbooked"). At first we were disappointed, as we had heard good things about the Allegro. We were so pleasantly surprised by teh Amalfi. Very modern design, GREAT and friendly front desk service. The bed was very comfortable. A wonderful cocktail hour (with complimentary wine and martinis!) and complimentary breakfast. It was a great experience, would totally recommend!

Just Wonderful

We just returned from a 8 day stay at the hotel. The room was nice, comfortable beds and the service was excellent. The manager's breakfast and evening reception is a definite plus. We will definitely stay here again.

Incredible!

This hotel cannot be beat for location, price, & atmosphere. The location is ideal, at the corner of State & Kinzie. There are fantastic restaurants & bars all around, including House of Blues & Harry Caray's. We stayed in a "Corner King" room. The room was amazing. Two of the four walls are floor to ceiling windows. Even just being on the 5th floor, we had great views of the surrounding area. The decor and amenities are unmatched. The decor is very clean & simple but luxurious. The hotel is easy to miss from street level, but shouldn't be. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Its a perfect home base if your plans revolve around River North, State Street shopping, or Clark Street nightlife. Even if you'll be on the Mag Mile, this is a short cab ride away. We've officially named this our downtown hotel of choice!
