... Always thinking. Always thinking. At the train station we had one of those special moments: stopped at the office to reserve the Brussels to Amsterdam portion of today's trip. High speed trains often need reservations for a small additional fee. We had done this before with no problems. I said where we were headed and he said that's a high speed train and I said yes I know, I'd like to reserve two seats and he said it's all booked. Never looked at his ...

... to it. And, because of Andy's status with all our reward points through Mariott, we were surprised with some nice welcome treats that included a bottle of wine, water, and a fruit tray. As you can imagine they are narrow and tall with the most expensive homes being double wide and having a grand staircase. The Van Loon home was from one of the most wealthy families in the 18th century. They were co-founders of the Dutch East India Co (trading). It was a beautiful home. The best part for me was the formal gardens in the back that ...

Amsterdam , the city of canals and bicyclists

Today we start with a canal boat ride that takes us around the canals and see the city in the morning. The city is 8 feet below sea level. It is built on swamps, that is why they have so many canals. The one thing you notice right away is that for a city of 800,000 people, they have about 1,000,000 bicycles. The bicyclists rule the road. Everyone here ride them. And you do not see anyone wearing helmets while biking. The Dutch just do not like that. It is their best mode ...
