Lye Family Holiday - Australia - 2008

Starting with a 5 night stay in Melbourne, we managed to cover most of the city itself, St Kilda's and some of the suburbs. Shopping was more fun than I remembered as the DFO was just a short walk away from our hotel And the eating was equally good (from Indian to Chinese, Italian to Australian), the food was always good. Queen Victoria Market is a must visit place, and the freshly made dips and pastries are simply to die for. Le Bon Cafe at St Kilda's and the fish and chips shop further down...

Musing on the moon

Whilst flying to Melbourne I watched a beautiful full moon rise over the desert. I had forgotten that the moon looks different from the Southern hemisphere - it's rotated thorough about 90 degrees.

Melbourne - A chocolate mocha surprise

I arrived at the Alto Hotel on Burke at about 10:30 and was warmly greeted by the lady at reception who checked me into a room on the first floor. When I got to the door, the key wouldn't work (or perhaps I didn't work - difficult to tell) so I tramped back down to reception to let her know and ask for assistance. Up she came with me (I'm sure bot of us expecting that it was me with the problem) and found a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door of the room - apparently occupied. "No worries" she ...

Melbourne Idenitiy

Day 1, off to an early start and out of the door by 8am feeling fine. A crisp but bright morning I headed off in search of coffee and entertainment.... The first port of call being Pelligrini's Bar the Melbourne equivalent of Bar Italia. A small old fashioned Italian coffee shop serving tumblers of fine cappuccino. After that little pick me up and a read of my Lonely Planet guide I decided to head to another great Coffee house - Brother Baba Budan and another great coffee (this time a creosot...

Melting pot Melbourne: the city of hook turns

The last 3 days we spent in Melbourne, an interesting city of contrasts: Nice avenues with trees and beautiful historical buildings are regularly crossed by tiny, shabby back alleys. You can find anything here: Chinatown with hundrets of china- and thairestaurants, the greek quarter, the colourful and almost trashy bohemian quarter Fitzroy with its alternative, artistic and trendy elements, and yeah, finally the worlds fifth ugliest building, the Federation Square, Melbournes meeting place wi...

Hot in the city....

... inside matched this (like in Grand Central Station in New York), but it was just a bit dirty and grubby and not at all exciting. SO lingered a while in Fed Square, before heading off into the CBD. From here the tour took me passed and through Block and Royal Arcades. These are stunning and very classy, probably dating back from Victorian times (according to the Lonely Planet, Block Arcade was built in 1891, so its nearly as old as Paul!). They were full of life ...

Also, both countries have small populations living in a large land mass, with populations concentrated along perimeters (in Canada nearly 90% lives close to the US border, while in Australia most people live on the East coast and some on the West coast ...

Melbourne 1st - 6th March 2009

... us up and we went to the Casino - we all had a little flutter but no big wins. From the Casino we went to 'The Bar' for karaoke, we didn't sing but was funny watching everyone else, we were going to finish the night in 'Odeon' but Zoe couldn't get in as she was wearing 'thongs', but it was already 1ish so were happy enough to head home. 3rd March 2009 With Zoe's wheel being broken we decided to head into the city with Wei to get it fixed. Wei had Uni so we ...

... corner without even being told to go after watching his older brothers being told to do it!! So cute!!! Scott's brother Glen who is in London, suprised the family by knocking on the door in a Santa outfit and pretending to have lost his raindeer. His sister answered the door and said she is from New Zealand so she doesn't know the area but then his mum came to the rescue by pretending to be a raindeer with some "funky" antlers ...

... we had a few drink and were progressively joined by various members of the university (friends of friends), some working in the library, some in the IT department, Math department but unfortunatly no Business or management department representatives. Next day went along the river bank played 'hackie' (small bean bag that you juggle around) and then headed off to HSBC which is along teh same road as Gucci and Louis Vitton, that way once you get cash out you might go spend ...
