Leaving the refuge the next morning we passed a memorial to a half dozen US fliers who had died on the mountain nearby during WWII when their bomber crashed into the mountain. Some of their remains remained frozen in ice till the 1970's when they were returned to the US for burial.

They had no wastebaskets and refused to take any trash because it was too hard for them to haul away, the location being so remote.
