      Another reluctant departure from Opatja but one must move on. The weather forecast was for "possible rain showers" What's new? Back on the motorways for some serious riding.       Leaving the refuge the next morning we passed a memorial to a half dozen US fliers who had died on the mountain nearby during WWII when their bomber crashed into the mountain. Some of their remains remained frozen in ice till the 1970's when they were returned to the US for burial.

      ... tall Dutch guys (neither could stretch out in the bunk beds), an uncle and his nephew. The uncle was 72 and had just hiked from Amsterdam to Istanbul and had written a book about his adventures. We noted his email and plan to write him after the trip.

      ... they bought out candles, not to be romantic, they were running low on electricity! For the same reason we had no lights in our cramped dorm rooms, so we had to undress by headlamp. They had no wastebaskets and refused to take any trash because it was too hard for them to haul away, the location being so remote. Too add insult to injury, it was one of the most expensive refuges (about $135 for the two of us).
