    ... by the town center several times and to the bank of the river and couldn't get close to our hotel or find a parking place so we grabbed our backpacks and hoofed the kilometer to Rhinehotel Lillie. The man at the hotel desk told us 'all is fair in parking and war' on the Rhine. No kidding. The trade off to the crowds? Great selection of restaurants, lots to walk around and see and a beautiful view ...

    After Trier, we had an easy time riding the train...then a boat down the the Mosel, then down the Rhine to Bacharach. I'll let the pictures do most of the talking, but we are still very relaxed, entertained, and loving the food and weather.

    ... in vertical rows straight up the steep mountainous river valley. Every once in a while you can see a small monorail lift that is installed among the vines that allows the farmer access to his field and an avenue in which to load up a cart of grapes and get them down the hill.

    The driving was so much easier. Less traffic except for motor homes and bikes and our biggest decision was--which side of the river should we drive on now or should we go up the mountain here ...
