Sydney's Temporary Contemporariness
May 22, 2004 (20 photos)

7/4/04 After our stint of campervanning in the mountains we arrived in Sydney ready for some hardcore big city action. Our taxi dropped us outside the Altamont Hotel on the Darlinghurst Road, booked through an excellent website called wotif.com, that sells cheap last-minute hotel rooms among other things, with our mod-room with all mod-cons sett...

Backpackers Only

from David Watson on 2005-11-24
This hotel is the first hotel in Australia that I've stayed in that doesn't provide soap. At the price, that came as a shock - OK if you're backpacking, but not for a business traveller. Although the bed was comfortable and the TV worked fine, the room had a number of problems. There was no shower curtain, so the water goes everywhere and the hot water tap on the hand basin leaked (had to turn it off to get any sleep). The room had a thin door to the roof garden and as there were 3 backpackers outside until very late, the noise was a big problem. There were lots of other problems in the room, but, basically, this hotel is poor value for money and not the place to go if you want a good nights sleep.

Didnt work for us

from murky on 2005-08-10
Maybe I just didnt "get it", maybe I was spoilt by 3 weeks in Thailand, but I was dissapointed with my stay here.

The room would have been nice when it was opened but now was worse for wear, not enough lights, mirrors hard to use, no handtowels or face cloths. The breakfast buffet was minimal, no fruit (in Australia no fruit?)

And there was junk stored in odd corners. Yes I know boutique hotels are supposed to be a bit quirky but this just felt like amateur hour.

I dont know what...maybe 'class'

A lovely warm welcoming atmosphere,a great feel,as opposed to the sterility of others....and even a dog..how fabulous.

Excellent Hotel!

from nick47 on 2005-07-19
Excellent hotel in a great area of sydney! On a busyish road but suprisingly quiet at night!

Nice large rooms and a relaxed atmosphere!

You will not find a better hotel for AUS $90 anywhere in sydney!

Loved it!

Great hotel and great location

from shawnmensa on 2005-03-30
I loved this hotel and loved the location. It was walking distance to plenty of restaurants and bars. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and always had great suggestions for dining. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. I wish it had an in-room safe but other than that I had no complaints. I'd recommend this hotel to my friends and I'd stay here again.

Cute with loadz of charm

from A TripAdvisor User on 2005-03-22
we were reccommeded to stay at the altamont thru friends..we normally stay at larger hotels but decided to give it a chance.....the hotel has so much character...our room was large and airy with a cute little courtyard which apparantly is hard to find in sydney.....the staff were very helpful and made us feel right at home.....also the location is superb...central to everything worth seeing and doing in sydney...we stayed for two weeks and would defintely recommend....

Give This Place a Big Miss

from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-06-15
This place is SHOCKING! Totally incompetent staff from booking right through to check out. The whole place smells of cigarette smoke and is very dirty. The room I stayed in had walls crumbling off and were covered in mildew, the blinds are litterally brown with water stains, the bed had springs sticking right through and only 1 lamp worked in the whole room. Dont do it! Sure the location is great, but this place is gross!

Charming

from A TripAdvisor User on 2004-03-10
A gorgeous little hotel located in the heart of Darlinghurst. The decor is really interesting and comfortable, it has Indonesian furniture throughout and a stunning rooftop garden.

The best part was the price and the warm service offered by the management.

Highly reccommend to all types of travellers.

Simply BAD

from A TripAdvisor User on 2003-12-31
I booked this hotel one year in advance based on the write ups I had read. One month for arrival I was contacted and forced to prepay although I was told that my reservation would be held with a credit card until check in time.

I paid as requested, but when I arrived the room was not as advertised.

The bathroom was covered in mold, the shower leaked into the main bathroom area and the carpet was filthy.

They CHAINED the main entrance after 8PM because they claim that reception is then closed. At the same time they do not allow any incoming phone calls.

I requested a refund for the balance of my stay but the refused to refund me. This is more like a youth hostel than a high end hotel as advertised.

The most unique friendly well priced boutique hotel

This little hotel is perhaps the friendliest, best located , best priced and generally really cool boutique hotel that i have stayed at and I see alot being a travel writer.I highly reccommend it, and a tip, negotiate a great rate with the management, they encourage it.Enjoy
