... the view by the lighthouse. After a ~2 hour walk down in the burning heat, we caught a bus back to La Serena and got off at the supermarket. Rach bought a hotdog while I bought some pollo viennas and bread rolls to make hotdogs with when we got back to the hostal. When we got back, Rach and Ash picked up their nice smelling clothes from the laundry. Not gonna lie - I was pretty jealous. As we cooked dinner the lady found ways to watch us as we cooked! Super awks but ok. We then ...

... to adding others. Anyway we headed off to the Elqui Valley with an inexperienced albeit pleasant guide and a very experienced driver. Once we got him to put down the phone we got along quite well. The Elqui Valley is almost as dry as the road to Arequipa. The only green areas are those that are irrigated. The sea was tempting until we saw scores of jelly fish being washed up on the sand and the beach with rubbish ...

... br> After shopping, we stopped for lunch in a cute little restaurant in downtown La Serena, then headed back to the motel to get ready to head up the mountain. The trip up the mountain takes about an hour, and is mostly on dirt roads. Once we got to CTIO, we settled into our rooms and gazed at the beautiful scenery. We won't start observing until tomorrow night, and it looks like it'll be cloudy tonight anyways.

... America Line is celebrating its 140th year, so there are all kinds of extra parties and events. Mostly sales related of course – but that’s why it’s been around for so long I suppose. The last cruise also marked the 750th voyage for the Veendam. She’s a stout old girl although the rough seas around here have put their marks on her. The bow and hull are covered in scuffs and scraps from rocks and ice and sailing through storms. The last couple of ...
