... It turned out that our previous guide was not our guide and Claudio, our new guide got on the bus.

The Elqui Valley has had viticulture for 150 years but not for wine but to make the Chilean Pisco. This distilled drink is also produced in Peru but in Chile it is more boutique. The source wine is made from three grapes, Muscat (Austria, Alexandria and Rosa types), Torontel and Pedro Jiménez (PX) and usually only Muscat ...

    Day 5

We woke up early to a fantastic breakfast! Pan, bread, butter, jam, scrambled eggs with ham, tea and cake! Which was all filling and delicious. Except we got the feeling though while the lady was very nice - she didn't like us very much. Once we headed out, we got our map out and started exploring. Much smaller vehicle than I had envisioned. If I had known I would not ...

... only a few problems - I almost entered a one-way street - or major thoroughfare - on exiting the gas station, and then I missed the correct turn on the very complicated way we managed to get to our hostel on its one-way street, but after 3 tries we made it (this was fewer than yesterday). We got our bags out of the bodega storage area. The car rental man came and smilingly gave us the OK after looking over the very dirty little car. We hefted ...

    Shopping and Arriving at CTIO

We spent the morning shopping in the marketplace in La Serena. I got so many cool things for my family and friends back home! I can't wait to show them all. Shopping was so much fun though, right up my alley. I also picked up a few pieces of jewelry with lapis lazuli in them. Lapis lazuli is a blue semi-precious stone that is mostly mined in Chile and Afghanistan. So of course while I'm in Chile I had to pick some ...
