... numbers running north/south and south/north and odd numbers for roads running east/west or west/East. The soil in the Black Forest is not fertile so there are mainly fir trees here. Beech or Oak trees are rarely to be found. Until the Middle Ages the Black Forest was truly a dark forest - the Romans called it "Silva Nigra", a murky and almost impenetrable woodland. This morning maintenance decided to change the fuel pump on the water heater as we still have a small water leak, we then walked into the village to buy some bread. After a short drive we arrived at Colmar-a beautiful town with cathedrals, timbered houses and canals running through ...

The medieval towns of Ribeauville and Riquewihr were our destinations today. These very quaint towns are about 1.5hrs from Haselbourg and were recommended as worth the visit by a number of people we met over the last week and we were not disappointed. The towns are very close to each other so it was quite easy to spend a few hours in each town and still have time to explore other villages in the area. Both towns are full of half timbered homes ...
