... the magnificent Grossglockner drive we head to Hallstatt a small authentic Austrian village perched on the edge of the lake. Pop 720 and the men dress in leather pants and Austrian ladies look like dolls in their traditional dresses……. except for the 3000 Japanese and American tourists it’s Austrian Fairy land. We had arrived in late and nearly all the hotel/pensions were full and I don’t think they needed a couple of Aussies to add to the mix. Five kms away ...

... into her and her family, she was one of those people you immediately make a connection with, what a pity I will never see her again. It was time for a coffee before going to the Summit area. The Bergstation Dachstein Krippenstein -Seliban is 2100m. We encounter a thick white wall of cloud. We could see the snow that had not melted yet, there was a lot of that but that's all. ... make out through the gloom, towering mountains, boats like butterflies, flitting across the water, and church steeples as we rounded bends. Then we followed a river for many miles until we came to lake Hallstatt. We swept along the shores until you could see the township of Hallstatt with its distinct church steeples. The train stops at the train station called Hallstatt but to get to the town you must cross the lake by ferry. We arrive at the small village and walk to our ...

    Back from the wilderness

Today was my last day on the trek. I was kind of glad of that not only because the past week had been physically gruelling, but also I realised I was a bona fide 'city girl'. I had great respect and appreciation for mother nature but all the life skills I'd learnt so far in life help me to survive in the city, not in the wilderness. I felt incredibly alone and uneasy in the wilderness, and yet being on my own in towns or cities I ...
