      ... the rather bizarre but beautiful Kourna Lake with its sunbathing geese, and for a divine plate of fresh yoghurt and Sfakia cheese pie both smothered in honey in Vryses.

      ... was waiting at the town and we set off to cross Crete from south to north, which means going up and down and round and round, as it is across the grain of the country. Fortunately we had more or less got used to Cretan roads by this time. The worst part was driving back from Chania dropping off people on the way, in reverse order, and it was about 9 o’clock when we finally reached Kolimbari, very tired but very pleased to have achieved the walk and seen such a wonderful ...

      ... beautiful - the pictures couldn't even capture it. First, it is preserved in a National Park, which is so good because there are no big hotels or restaurants anywhere near it.  There are a few small cantinas, chairs set out for free use, a few spiggots for showers and a trailer with portable bathrooms.   The water is aqua blue, crystal clear, the sand light and fluffy, and there is a lagoon.  This makes it so you can walk to a small island by wading through water up ...
