Study Abroad in South Africa

... the time spent volunteering made it worthwile. I was placed at Cotlands, a hospice for children with HIV/AIDS or other palliative care needs. I enjoyed every moment and plan to voluneer again when I come back from summer break - the children are adorable and love the attention - even though they are "sick" most of them are able to run around and play as others do.
So...classes are finally over and summer is here!
She prefers to hang out in Cape Town instead of Stellenbosch. We got directions and headed out.

We drove around a bit trying to find The Big Easy, and once we finally did, it looked a little too swanky for this particular evening. So ...

Efffrrrrica was invited to join the UN security council when, for all intents and purposes, it was nuclear warhead free....and we talked about his uncle, a diamond trader who had pictures of himself rubbing shoulders over brandy with the then minister of defence for ZA...and ...

Townshio tour - a long overdue entry

I feel really guilty it's been so long since I last wrote. Somehow the days turned into weeks and although I was often at the Internet place in town I never got round to writing my blog. Last weekend was quite a mixed bag. We spent two nights in Cape Town staying in a lovely hostel called the Ashanti Lodge. It was definitely the nicest hostel I've stayed at, it even had a pool although it was too cold to swim in it. It was a big square Victorian building with wooden floors ...

... of, they are both professionals, one is a scientist @ the CSIRO the other is an occupational therapist. They have signed a lease for 12 months @ a rental rate higher than what we thought we would get - they must have a love for polished concrete :). Other than that we have been through our initial teething issues with our car, aka 'red rover', i am loving the car - but sometimes it just needs some R&R away from us. We have lost ...

Penguins, Wine and National Cleavage Day!

... great fun, and to top it off. It was National Cleavage Day!........yes, National Cleavage Day in South Africa is April 4th. So.........if you plan to come and visit South Africa in March, I highly recommend to delay your trip until early April.......oh.........Steph is coming, so I have to quickly change the subject in this blog! Oh, and one thing we kept seeing signs for all over the area was "Don't feed the Baboon's"...........I wonder what that is all about?

... garden was having the view of Table Mountain towering in the background as we walked about all the plants. The garden was pretty huge.. our favorite parts were the Protea area. Long Street and Kloof Street Couple people we met recommended Zula's for some local S.A. music. So we headed to Long street on Sat night. The bars, clubs, and restaurants along Long Street were packed, with lots of people in the street, and also local ...

From Cairo To Cape Town, More Or Less

... of the current security situation where you are at you should encounter few serious problems here. I have spent a fair amount of time traveling "off the beaten track" and it is in those places that remarkably I felt even more safe than in many of the more touristed areas. And I didn't even get malaria once, but you should definately take some meds with you. I hope to return here someday and travel West Africa, an even wilder place if Gabon is any indication. Farewell Africa!

Doctors and night life

... kid we saw walk by. And we wonder why so many students got back on the ship with colds. After Tequila Cantina, we all got in cabs and went over to Long Street and hung out a place called Cool Runnings for a bit before calling it a night. I can see why Long Street is so popular. It's a long street lined with bars. It's like home without having to get through the casinos to find the bars. All in all, it was a great way to spend an evening out with friends in Cape Town.

... more pictures. I was going to get dinner out but the pub I was going to was not open so headed back home again and had cheese, meat and salad for dinner together with strawberries and crème. Tomorrow I am taking another tour. My cousin arrived back about 10 and we had another early night. Not sure why I am so tired these days.
