Asher: First day Turkey: Istanbul

Istanbul is incredible! It has many tourist attractions and markets. We have already had dinner at an incredible restaurant. The two places I am still dying to go to are the Blue Mosque and the Aya Sophia. If you don't know about the Aya Sophia, here is some information: Emperor Justinian (one of the Roman's great emperors) had it built to show how great the Roman empire was. It was also one of the greatest churches in the world. Built in 537 AD, it was a church until 1453 when Sultan Mehmet ...

Gracey: Day 1, Istanbul

When I woke up, I was surprised to know that it was 8:10. We were going to be landing soon. I strted playing a few games, then I heard the Captain say that it was time for landing. I decided to turn off the little screen and close my eyes. I wnated it to feel weird. I was at least trying to close my eyes, but I couldn't because I wanted to see the Eifel Tower. Iw as looking for that tower, but I couldn't seem to find it. What I didn't know was that the airport was outside of Paris. We landed ...

Family - day 2, Istanbul

Another great day! Everyone slept late, and we only got up to breakfast by about 9:45. The breakfast room is on the 5th floor of the hotel and has magnificent views of the Sea of Marmaris and the part of the Sutanahmet district. The breakfast covered the full specrum of Mediterranen and western type foods, with a range of eggs, salads, yogurts with honey, and a huge selection of cheeses. Everyone ate well, which was just as well - because we did a lot of walking. We started by going through t...

Family - Istanbul, day 3

Yet another great day in the city!! We got a slightly later start than expected (we got to sleep a little later than expected the night before), but that didn't slow us down. We were out the hotel after another great breakfast, and headed by foot down to the Topkapi Palace. The sun was shining, a little breezy, but really quite pleasant. We walked round the back of the Aya Sophia, and in through the main gate of the Palace. The whole area was lovely, full of people, and quite spring-like. The...

Family - Flight to Istanbul

The flight out of Milas-Bodrum airport was at 1:45pm, but we had to return the car by 12. It was a 35 minute drive to the airport, and we were met at the door by the car rental man at the appointed hour. There was only one restaurant in the airport, and the prices were exorbitant. When I asked the waitress why a cup of coffee cost 9YTL (about $7 US), she was honest enough to tell me: "Airport prices!". The flight was on time, and we were met at the airport by our hotel transfer guy for the dr...

Family - Istanbul. The Last Day

We got off to a slow start, on this, our last day in Istanbul. Firstly, we had to "spring forward" at 3am for summer time, and secondly, the only sight that the kids really wanted to see was the Aya Sophia. It was also probably the coldest day of the trip, with overcast skies and a fairly biting wind. We got to the Aya at about 12:30, and were impressed, to say the least. At one time, the largest man-made structure, and for many centuries, the largest church in the world, it had been built by...

... is modest, but beautifully decorated, the Koran is large and thick, say 60 x 60 x 20 cm closed, but it is open at the place where it was being read when a famous person was assassinated. The calligraphy on the sheepskin is large, but difficult to see in the low light levels. Outside, head back to the road, catch the first bus going past, and after a few direction scares, it places us back at the market area. Decide ...

... right next to ours, where we negociated 12$ per person. At noon we checked-out our hotel (by the way they cheated on us, they didn`t say that we gave them too much cash) and we moved our stuff to the rest of our group. At 12:30 we were supposed to meet up with Goki, a Hospitality Club member, that was going to host us that following night. Goki is a medicine student and - just like every Turkish guy - fancies a blonde girl with blue eyes... When we were about to enter Hagia Sofia ...

All shopped out

... puddings, of course. Yummy. On to the Grand Bazaar. This is a vast covered market containing some 4500 shops. Even though the array of merchandise on display was spectacular, the souks of Marrakesh have spoiled us forever. Wonderful as it is, the Grand Bazaar cannot compete for manic, frenetic activity, enticing sounds and smells and the press of humanity. However, it is still a not-to-be-missed shopping experience and we meandered for hours. The art of haggling ...

... all the way down the street. Anyhoo. We wandered around the first day and got a little lost, looking at the sweets and other foods it was very like Greek dishes we knew of. Unfortunately we didnt find any crab juice and this made us very sad. Damn Simpsons lied to us?! The blue mosque and Aya Sofia were beautiful, I cool and calm inside, away from the throng of life outside. Here some tourists were forced to cover up but enough bagging there. We had little glasses of apple tea which ...
