Historical Traveler Reviews Allerton Hotel Chicago
Had a great stay at the Allerton in Chicago. Very close to all the main attractions on North Michigan Ave. Valet was very courteous. Front desk staff was very helpful and accomodating. Really enjoyed the "Taps on Two" restaurant, although it was a little pricey.
Our room was very clean and pleasant. We didn't likethe unusual elevator set-up, but that was a minor thing. Overall, it was a very nice hotel!
Beautiful hotel. Great location. Wonderful staff. Good value for North Michigan Ave. Highly recommend!
We recently stayed at the Allerton in Chicago and had a great stay. We had a nice, clean room on the 15th floor. The view wasn't great but we got a deal over the internet so I imagine they give the best rooms to those guests paying full price.
The location was exceptional - right on the corner of Michigan Ave. and Huron. We were in walking distance to everything we wanted to see and do in the Water Tower/John Hancock area.
The staff at the front desk and the valet were very courteous. We didn't have a lot of special requests but they were very helpful and allowed us a late check-out with no problems.
The Allerton is an older hotel that has a great deal of charm. I'd go back anytime.
Nice Place to Stay in Chicago
We visited Chicago for the weekend recently and were sent to the Allerton through our Priceline bid. We found the hotel to be very nice.
Our room was clean and the beds very comfortable. We enjoyed the unique charm of our room. It wasn't as large as some of the newer hotels but we didn't miss the "cookie cutter" rooms found in new hotels. The recent renovation of the hotel met our expectations and the location can't be beat! We would be happy to stay at the Allerton again and hope they accept our next Priceline bid.
Worst Hotel I've stayed at in terms of meeting expectations
I hardly ever write reviews but I have to make an exception here. I do travel frequently so I know how to put things in perspective. I recently utilized the Allerton for my wedding guests in Chicago.
Without a doubt, it was an absolute nightmare. Whatever there was to screw up, they did. Everything from the valet non-service, to the exceptionally clueless and downright rude staff...especially the "management" (other than the maid, concierge and breakfast waiter who were nice) to random overcharges on various items. We had several things in the room that did not work properly that they were slow to respond to and then not able to fix. I don't consider myself a snob since I can appreciate a clean Motel 6 under certain circumstances...but this was truly horrific. It was really a comedy of horrors...except no one was laughing. I've never seen my wife so mad in her life (and she NEVER gets mad). I was embarrassed for my guests and I can't stress how much I now detest this hotel.
A pleasant stay
We just returned from a three night stay at the Allerton and were very pleased. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. Our room was a decent size and the bathroom was nice. We were there on a weekend shopping package which included 2 drinks and breakfast. I don't think it applied to the Sunday night stay but I asked politely and was given the same deal for the additional night. I have no complaints at all about this hotel.
Great location, but....
I agree with the Aug. 23 review. My husband and I paid for a 4 nights stay for Sept. 4-8 in May, and upon arrival were given a standard room (sized for one) instead of the king deluxe that we requested. It is written on their confirmation that requests are not guaranteed, but I don't think they ever intended to give a deluxe room because I booked the room through Delta Airlines. At check in, the clerk offered an upgrade to a suite, which we declined because we thought the king room would suffice. He then made the comment that he hoped we would not "run out" on the hotel. I guess he knew we would be cramped! The room would have been fine for one person, but was too small for two. The bathroom was not as big as a closet. I can empathize with the towels, yes they are huge, but we always were supplied with only one towel! Had to ask for more the first night, and they sent a few which I put in our suitcase in case we did not have enough for future days. Good thing I did. Everyday the maid only left one towel. This was a big hint that this room was really for one! But they got us on this one. Our last morn. there, trying to get away, I did not notice that we only had one towel (stored supply had run out), the floor mat was hung on a rod so it resembled a towel. I dried off with the floor mat! We also called in for a wake-up call on the morn we checked out because we had to make sure we got up to catch our flight at O'Hare before noon. Guess what, NO wake-up call came! We just happened to wake up in time. I have stayed in a great many hotels, but have never NOT received a wake-up call that was requested! Also, other hotels always give you the room that was requested, or they upgrade at their expense! Next time in Chicago, my husband and I will stay elsewhere. The Allerton is not the only hotel near Mich. Ave!!

A TERRIBLE way to treat guests.......my daughters and I booked a room for THREE adults to the Allerton Crowne Plaza Hotel in April 2003 for our outing on July 19th. We booked through Orbitz and received what we thought was a good rate. When we arrived we were RUDELY told we could NOT get in at check-in time (3 pm). After coming back at 4 pm, we were told to wait in the lobby....that someone would call for us when our room was "ready". We waited another 1/2 hour and when I went to the desk to inquire AGAIN about our room, the clerk told us that Yes, our room with ONE bed was ready. I informed the clerk our reservation was for THREE adults, which he could see on his reservation form.....he inquired to the other clerk, who very rudely said, "IT'S A STANDARD ROOM!! ONE BED!" When we asked if we could have a cot, they replied the room was TOO SMALL for a cot. We went to our room (all THREE of us!) and found the bathroom light did not work and there were NO bath towels in the bathroom!! (THIS after waiting an hour and a half PAST check-in for our room to be "ready"!) We phoned down to the front desk and asked for THREE bath towels and someone to come fix our bathroom light. An hour later TWO bath towels were brought up, and no one EVER came to fix the light!. One of my daughters slept on the floor that night so my pregnant daughter and I could sleep in a bed! After several letters of complaint, I've gotten no satisfaction from this hotel and I STRONGLY advise you to steer clear of this establishment! They do NOT cater to guests who have got their reservations through an online service.
Loved the Allerton Crown Plaza
My husband and I stayed at the Allerton July 2-6 and loved it! It's a smaller hotel, but they take excellent care of you. You can't beat the location either. The only thing I could suggest is try to stay on a higher floor (we were on 10) so you don't get as much street noise.
Another suggestion....make dinner reservations as soon as you get there. They are almost impossible to get if you wait!
We loved Chicago and can't wait to go back.
Allerton Crowne Plaza
Just returned from 48 hours of shopping on Michigan Ave. and we had a wonderful time! My daughters friend, her friend's mother and I stayed at the Allerton. I had a free upgrade to a suite with two double beds thanks to the Priority Club and it was very pretty, spacious, and overlooked the Mag Mile. The gentleman who registered us couldn't have been nicer. We found the Allerton to be a beautiful hotel at the perfect location on Michigan Ave. We truly had an enjoyable stay in Chicago and would certainly stay at the Allerton again. We did not have a problem with the elevator changes, room, etc. Very positive stay.
