The hospital was never used because (surprise surprise) the Japanese never bombed Mt Isa. Back at the caravan park the kids cracked the ice on the pool while Jane and Simon cooked the next 3 days of dinners in the camp kitchen (ah, we love the camp kitchen). ...

... so Hayley took the older children to Mt Isa to look around while back at camp Martin walked along the creek bed with his camera. Julia and I fed the pigs then she continued playing with the dogs. I think she is suffering from canine deprivation. Later Norman, Martin and I took the BMW and returned to the stock camp ( about 45 mins drive away). We were hoping to see the branding but it had finished by the time we got there. ...

... tours of the Venus battery where the gold was extracted, and a sound and light show in the evening at a lookout overlooking the whole town. They even have a statue commemorating the men who first found gold in the creek, originally discovered by an aboriginal boy called Jupiter, working for three white men. Jupiter's Casino is named after him. Even the free rest area had a poppet head - a piece of machinery used in the gold mines.

... from Cloncurry for the short drive to Mt Isa - just over 100kms away. We are getting very used to driving along straight boring stretches of road but the scenery along the highway into Mt Isa was vastly different to that. Beautiful rocky jump ups, high escarpments and the road even had bends and hills. The welcome sign on the highway into town made us both laugh as we passed it…it read “Welcome to Mt Isa, ...

This afternoon, was a treat. We got to visit Jennifer and family at 3:30pm, just in time for her breakfast before she starts the night shift at the mine.
