We used our transport cards immediately, boarding the number 1 vaporetto at Piazzale Roma and riding all the way down the Grand Canal to the Giardini stop in Castello. Boarding at the point of origin, we were able to get window seats, and I took many photos of the beautiful palazzi along the water's edge. ... we had a storm, but it blew over fairly quickly. We were on our feet a lot, particularly in San Marco, as you not allowed to sit in the square, it is against the law. If you do sit, which we did, you will be told quite quickly to hop up and find an area elsewhere.

We were amazed at the number of boats, ferries and gondolas in the water traveling from place to place.
