After a very decent breakfast in the dining car, much excitement was created with the announcement that we would be passing a landmark. The iron man is made out of iron sleepers and was built to mark the one millionth sleeper laid on the track.
The luxury of train travel goes beyond the mere appointments of your cabin, beyond the food and upholstery. It lies somewhere in the lulling motion and sound, the steady rhythmic pace of the wheels across the tracks. The landscape rolling past, ...
DAY 6 MON The shuttle bus to the airport was not due until 11.55am so we filled in time by walking once to the exciting Smith Street Mall. I had taken very few pictures in Darwin so in desperation I snapped Margaret sipping coffee at an outdoors café with a kiosk carrying the sign "Darwin City Centre" in the background. The flight to Alice Springs took less than two hours and we found QANTAS to be much superior to Virgin Blue. To be fair, the QANTAS flight was a normal economy class fare whil...

After stricking out with our lunch, he took off on a low flight back to the front of the airport. maybe he has a secret entrance.
Finally we are on the very short from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock Resort. it is rather bumpy due to the ...

We didn't have enough room in our van for his bike and small tow trailer, so we waited with him until he hailed down another vehicle to give him a lift. Even though there was “nothing to see”, we really enjoyed traveling through this surreal landscape.

At this stage of our travels we made a change of plans and decided to do a quick detour North to see the red centre of ...
Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia waynenwendy... in Red. The median age in the fancy cars seemed to be about 123 so I can't imagine it's a lively drunkfest rolling through the Outback. We common folk had two by two seating that looks suspiciously like the old airline seats I have seen in old black and white 1950s pictures. Our Red car demograhics of about 1/3 decrepit and 2/3 backpackers made us the craziest mix of people I have seen in a while. You want to talk about a bizarre collision of ...

The 4Wd failed so we got a bit mired in the sand but fellow campers came to our rescue. Luckily it got fixed next day as the off road drive to Palm Valley in the west McDonnell Ranges was incredible – so unbelievably bumpy but great fun – we didn ...

Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia 0156... We went for an afternoon stroll and I had to wear my chunky cardigan. Can't believe the difference to just a month ago, when we first arrived in Alice Springs, when it was 35 degrees! To warm ourselves up in the evening I cooked us an Indian takeaway, so it felt almost like a normal Saturday night (minus the group of drunken family members of course!). We had a spicy chicken tikka massala, jasmine rice, poppadoms (brilliant invention to do them in the microwave!) and even mango chutney.
Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia steph_nico... the screen slides away to reveal our guide in a specially designed booth to allow demonstration of how opal is prepared once mined (no expense is spared!!). (Adam and I hang our heads in shame given our blatant disrepect of the film - how long had she been there we wonder. had she heard our mocking? let that be a lesson to us - sadly however, it is not). The demonstration is another treat! Our guide is a star! The demonstration booth is set so far back ...
