Alice... Who the Hell is Alice

I arrived in Alice Springs this morning after a 2.5 hour flight from Cairns. Well the first things that hits you once you get off the plane at Alice - apart from the heat - is the fecking flies!!!! Million of them, buzzing around and I soon learnt the Australian wag - that is flapping your arms in front of you to try and shoo them away. So I went for a walkabout Alice. So what is Alice Springs all about. Well it is basically in the very centre of Australia and in the 1800s the settlement of A...

Alice Springs

We were minging after the bus ride from Adelaide to Alice Springs and it was roasting in Alice when we got in. Rang the Alice Lodge where we had booked a room and we were collected by the guy running the Hostel who is from Limerick in Ireland. Settled into the Lodge and then took a walk. Following a tip off from Michaels mate Dave (eh that's Bricko, not you Hogie!) we went up to the war memorial which is on a hill looking over the city that evening to watch the sunset along most of the other ...

The town in the middle of nowhere

I woke up at 6am. Everyone in the coach was starring. They were looking at one amazing spectacle. The orange sun was slowly rising over a landscape inhabited solely by small short bushes and trees. Not one sign of life in sight. I covered my face with an eye shade and fell back to sleep until 8am when I got out my nutri grain bar and was given some raisin bread by one German girl.

I sat for an hour with my new friend Julien listening to cheesy German Europop but at 9:30 there was anno...

In a town called Alice ....ooo yea!!!

So there was only one reason, in our opinion, to go to Alice Springs and thats because its the gateway to The Rock. Which we hoped to only soend one night there then we were off 'on tour'. However when we checked in we were told they were over booked so we had to go the next day, 'no drama' so we postpones it and spent a day in Alice Springs. Well other than being abused for being a westener and being told 'to go back to our back yard and eat kangaroo' (by a person who wasn't even aboriginal ...

3 day tour of Aryes Rock, Kings Cannon and the Olga Mountains. Uluru, Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta. www.therocktour.com.au - check out our group pics on their web site dated under the 10.07.06 Adams tour We spent two nights three days exploring the area. On our first day it was an early start 6 am - we drove to Kings Cannon and did a walk around it. The first hill to get up to the top was a killer especially in the heat. We did a rim walk around through the lost city, which has been in lots of...

Alice Springs here I come! This time I made my flight. A better start than before. :) It was facinating watching the land we flew over ger more and more red and baron. I was quite excited to go see Alice Springs. Not so much for the town itself, but to be litterally in the middle of nowhere, and of course to see Uluru (Ayres Rock). I arrived hungry though as they RAN OUT OF FOOD on my flight, JUST when they got to my row!! Grrr.. this displeased backpacker phill. I then had to wait around for...

2nd Oct Got our morning flight to Alice Springs from Sydney, and as soon as the plane doors opened the heat hit us. it was baking hot, apparently 40degrees C. We checked into our hostel and sorted out our 3 day tour for the following day and settled in for the evening. 3rd Oct. The tour we took was with The Rock Tour - a 3 Day trip of Kings Canyon, Yulara, Kata Juta, and Uluru (Ayers Rock) - absolutely class tour and would highly recommend this tour company, they were great. The craic was bri...

it's been a while!

Well, from Darwin we caught the train to Alice Springs, it took us 23 hours which is longer then the flight from the UK. Finally made it to Alice though & stayed at the Alice Lodge Packer's, it was great, it was fun and friendly & would stay there again for definite! Whilst in Alice, we visited a kangaroo sanctuary, it was so good, the joey's were really cute. We also visited Uluru (ayres rock) it was so surreal seeing the big red rock up close. It was a long day though. Tuesday we he...

... to make the trip from Adelaide. Fortunately our stay in Alice Springs was short for it was merely a gateway to our Outback adventure.

Early one morning we embarked on a bus with 19 others and headed deep into the bush. The trip entailed a total of 1500 km. We saw many a dead kangaroo on the drive as well as a cow with a bad case of rigor mortis. However there was no time to mourn the animals; we had rocks ...

UP THE MIDDLE

... decided to do it.

After Uluru we carried on 44 km to the Olgas (Kata Tjuta) and although we didn’t do the Valley of the Wind walk we did do the Waipa gorge.

We arrived in Alice Springs and spent the next 4 days preparing the ute and ourselves for our 4wheel drive camping adventure through the Kimberleys.

The highlights of that will be in the next Travelpod instalment!
