... Hungarian army back in 1882 and completed in 1911. Yesterday there was a movie night and it was not so busy because it was Sunday. This weekend there will be a festival of 3 days to celebrate the 16th years anniversary. Ones in two weeks on tuesdays there is a vegetarian meal for 2 euro at the infoshop, where they also organize informative filmscreenings, a bookshop-infocentre and the space functions further as meeting/discussion place and gallery. <br>

... of western civilization, with similar values even in its varied national characteristics. I'm not sure at this moment I can set down that which so rapidly and intermitantly races through my mind. My host here in Ljubljana happens to have a fairly contemporary treatise on the subject: Samuel P. Huntington's "The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order." It is sure to be one of my earliest reads upon returning home and settling ...

Ljubljana - Can you pronounce it correctly?!?!

... very funny dinner with Mark and Sunny just doing impersonations of the American couple all night. So hard to decipher what they were saying some of the time! Tiff decided to head off for an early one, but I thought I&#8217;d give the Scottish boys a run for their money. After several beers, wines, Slovenia shots (60% alcohol), dancing to Tina Turner and a few games of domino&#8217;s, I made it bed at an unknown ...

Ljubljana Castle

... We ordered some coffee, a cake and some handmade chocolates for each table. Very nice. I'd have to admit that we lingered over the coffee and cakes, not relishing the idea of going back out into the cold. When we did go back out, it was only for about 60 seconds, because we noticed a souvenir shop that clearly warranted our attention. Again we lingered of over the display of local handmade items. There were some lovely things for sale, but mindful of ...

Another country formerly known as Yugoslavia

... We decide to make it our base for a couple of excursions and go and hire a car from the equivalent of 'Rent-a-bomb' for a few days. We go over to collect the car to an old army barracks that has been turned into a hostel and this soldly built, tough-looking guy takes us over to this small, beaten-up looking Citroen AX, which he tells us has just had new brakes put in. Alice looks at me a bit doubtfully about taking this car but we decide to take the chance and fork over the money. The guy ...

... and headed to the bus station to check out my options there. No buses to Budapest and only one each morning to Zagreb, Prague, Bratislava and Vienna. Same for trains. No connections with any combinations. No flights and a $300 surcharge for one way car rentals. So after a couple hours of trying all the options I bought a ticket for the 2am train, threw my bag in a locker at the station and headed into town. Walked through the markets and then ...

Postscript to Slovenia: What is this Place?

A final moment to share from my time in Slovenia. A profound example of life there. On my first day, before even meeting Lindsay, I was sitting in a square eating my burek (big, greasy pastry-pie thing), watching some medievalists in garb going about their odd business. Two accordionists were dueling magnificently, and a local drunk was dancing and capering about ...

Day 1 - 7 I've flown to Slovenia where I'm staying with Ursa who I met in Hanoi 4 months ago. Ursa's working most of the day so I've been wandering around town or just kicking back in her apartment eating all the food. Ljubljana is a cool little town. It's small, quiet and looks really nice when the sun comes out(not ...

... is as quaint a major city as there is, and I feel like I can say this without even seeing the rest of the world. The Ljubljanica River bisects the old town, with three major bridges holding it together - the Dragon Bridge, the Triple Bridge, and the Cobblers' Bridge. The Dragon Bridge was dedicated to a Hapsburg Emperor and has two dragons, the symbol of Ljubljana, at each end. The Triple Bridge was built by native son and much-beloved Joze Pletcnik to resemble the ...

... in a kayak the width of a newspaper is a lot harder than it looks. And when you have to paddle down a series of surging rapids while trying to avoid fierce rocks, it is even harder. Our guide, Roman, did his best to help us to stay afloat. It worked until the very last rapid when, during a moment of hesitation, I was flipped into the freezing Soca. It was a long swim down that rapid, feet first as I was told, hanging onto my kayak and oar. At least the river is as ...
