Ronda & Granada

Ronda & Granada We left the rainy Costa del Sol behind and began our journey north. We climbed into the mountains to cliff-top Ronda. Ronda is set high on a plateau divided by the Tajo Gorge and the views from the city are incredible. Ronda is also home to Spain's oldest bullfighting ring- the Plaza de Toros. The tour of the bull ring was interesting although the thought of attending a bull fight nearly turned me green. Surprisingly, they still fight and it is very rare that a bull is not...

Granada

Well I have been pretty slack with updating this, mainly because I've just been having so much fun.. sitting at a computer doesnt seem too appealing. I'm actually writing this from Morocco, but I'll get to that later! My last few days in Madrid were spent doing daytrips. First out to El Escorial, which is a huge monastery, cathedral and palace built by the spanish royalty in Spain's heyday (about 500 years ago). It was unadorned outside set on the side of dry rocky mountains. Travel there mad...

Granada: Home of La Alhambra

...We woke up, packed, and checked out of the hotel just like every morning, but today we visited the ALHAMBRA. We met our guide, Maria, who was wonderful, and then began our tour. IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!! No expense was spared in building this huge palace. The detailed walls and ceilings were so intricate that it took your breath away every time you enter a room. If I had a week to explore and take in La Alhambra, I would still miss parts of it. (#1 STOP ON THE TRIP!) After La Alhambra,...

And we thought Madrid had good tapas...

... and having some native spanish speakers!) and wish we were going to the same cities, but we´ll take their advice when we get to Seville.

For now, we are off on our Honeymoon. We arrived in Costa del Sol saturday night and since then have been lying on the beach (or by the pool, to switch things up) all day long. This is the most work we´ve done in a day... don´t expect a blog post from Costa del Sol. But stay tuned for stories from Morocco!

Granada is bueno!

... everywhere, lettuce flying in the air, and one elderly Spanish woman at my feet. Who by the way did not speak a lick of English. I helped her up, she was saying something in Spanish, way to fast for my comprehension, and helped her collect her belongings which by this point were strewn about throughout most of the main street. Somehow Cassandra and I ended up escorting this lady to her home, which was at the apex of the ...

... of dance ive ever seen it was just something else, I could not believe what these people were capable of doing. And the singer was amazing, and the guitar player was just something else all together. Its no wonder this show was so well known, like WOW. It was an hour long but felt like only 15 minutes :(. worth every cent and then some. The spanish culture is so sweet.
So after the show we got some drinks and bought tapas...yes, it was hard to actually BUY tapas after getting ...

Strike one from my bucket list -- hello Granada!

... had a free Flamenco show (2 ladies, very tight pokka-dot dresses, ruffled lower down, often hiked up, stern expressions and pounding shoes; a guitarist who really knew his strings; and a closed-eyed guy singer); “passionate” comes to mind. A nice nightcap.

Tips on Spanish Culture

Things are going pretty well and I am starting to like the city more and more. I have 4 hours of Spanish class a day (9am-1pm), and in the afternoon go home by 3pm for lunch, do my homework during siesta, and have the evening to run errands, check the internet, hang out with friends, explore the city, etc.... This weekend a bunch of us went the beach again. Its only an hour away by bus from Granada, and it's a fun break from the usual. We left earlier this ...

... ilk, so it was less of a shock for them. To me it was absolutely stunning. The architecture is immeasurably intricate, the mix of influence is harmoniously balanced and the whole layout and feel of the place is positively enchanting. The walk through the grounds was timeless and the five or six hours we spent soaking it all up as the morning sun slowly cut through the ground frost passed by ...
