Neuschwanstein Castle

A travel blog entry by jlmcclure on Oct 27, 2014

Up and about at 7am and after some brekky we took a taxi to Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), where we started our tour to King Ludwig's castle. It is believed this castle is the idea behind Walt Disney's Snow White castle. The castle is quite a way out of Munich so off we go. First onto a train with our guide and our 7 other tour people, all English speaking, good start! We were on the first train for about 15 mins and then we were all ushered off and onto another train for about ...

To get to the castle, one takes a ferry to an island, and there is greeted with a slightly-smaller replica of Versailles, named the Herrenchiemsee, an homage to Ludwig's hero, Louis XIV, and resplendent under over 14 pounds of gold leaf. Although never finished ...

... World War II Memorial with pictures of fallen German troops with dates and ages. It was a sad reminder of what had taken place only a few decades ago. On another hike we found a lovely alpine lake with a nice restaurant to try some Oxtail Soup and crisp white wine.

The alps are amazing with their jagged peaks and shear cliffs. The weather was perfect hitting the low 70s in April. ...
