First day in Malaysia

A town which prides itself on its antique value. Every other shop sells antiques and there are numerous museums and historical buildings. Unfortunately we got caught in a tropical downpour (not the last one we will experience on our travels) whilst on a trishaw tour (three wheeled bicycle driven cart). Saw some iguanas under a bridge which looked like a mix between crocodiles and dinasours. For dinner we enjoyed some local food (our usual choice as its cheap cheap cheap!!) which consisted of ...

A quick stop in Melaka

When it rains it pours. Literally.
With Singapore behind me, and a tour group of 12 new friends to get acquainted with, we all entered Malaysia by coach in the pouring rain for the port town of Melaka. Not that it dampened the spirits one bit - it still feels like a complete bonus and privilege to be travelling in tropical lands at all - rain or shine!
I'm getting hungry just thinking about the absolutely gorgeous food that's available here, for next to nothing too. The national dish i...

Took a cheap local bus to Melaka which took 2.5 hours. Melaka is a small town with alot of old colonial history. Previously invaded by the Portuguese in 1511 and then the Dutch and British until it finally reached for Malaysian independence in 1957. This used to be a major shipping port but now more of a tourist area. We visited the Portuguese area to sample some of the local Portuguese dishes here....had dinner at the Restorante de Lisboa but I'd say there a was a lot more Malaysian than Por...

On the road from KL to Singapore

Before i went i had no idea what Melaka would be like other than it was a convenient stop between KL & Singapore. Now i am a convert. Melaka is so cute - no high rises here. Just a really nice, pretty town on a river with really cool architecture, lovely shops & bars/restaurants & heaps of culture. Again a flying visit. I took a trishaw ride (picture to follow) around the town. Trishaws are little carts/vehicles for 2 passengers which are powered by a bicycle (not sure if that's a...

Melaka

Had a very early start but fortunately I was up in time. We caught a bus from Singapore over the border into Malaysia on a six hour journey to Melaka. The bus was really nice - there are only three seats across and plenty of leg room so it was very easy to sleep. Melaka was a major trading port for Southeast Asia of the Portugese, then Dutch and finally the British East India Company before Singapore rose to fame! It is also a UNESCO world heritage site because of its colonial architecture. A...

... a t-shirt on. So we got in a taxi to the bus station then a bus over to Malacca which takes about 4 hours including time spent at the border.

Very easy border formalities, quick look up at me and a couple of stamps. Country number 4 - Malaysia. Just crossing the causeway instantly makes me feel like I'm now in Asia. Singapore didn't really feel like Asia. More a western city with Asian people. Where as in Malaysia it looks and feels more Asian ...

An old Seaport

... in the middle of the city covered in Chinese graves. The graves are sunken into the ground and well manicured trees dot the landscape. We climbed to the top and looked at the old city and sea beyond. The mosques had started evening prayer, which is chanted through a loud speaker and can be heard for miles. There air was heavy with humidity as the sun disappeared and we finally felt like we were on the other side of the world.

Mentawai Island

Located in the middle of Indian Ocean, 150 km and takes 9 hours trip from Padang, West Sumatra-Mentawai glowing with all the nature spirits and make it an extraordinary escaping spot from a hectic life. Mentawai is the natural habitat for 16 endemic species, and some of them categorized as endangered species e.g. Simakobu monkey (simias concolor-eat leaf as primary food). The present ...

Malacca

... glad to see the back of them and were delighted when one of the Portugese galleon ships full of Malay treasure sunk in the Straights of Malacca. Malacca had a lovely china town. Defined but the traditional house decorations rather than the flashing neon of the big cities. Malays continue to prove to be incredibly friendly. I like them alot.

... of bus touts who directed us to the windows of their bus companies. By this time it was 11.30 in the morning and we soon discovered that the only buses available where at 3pm or one just about to leave in 2 minutes. Panicked by the thought of having to spend the next 3 and a half hours in the bus station, we quickly paid our 20 ringgit fare and jumped on the departing bus. It was only 10 minutes later that we realised that we had a 3 hour journey ahead of us ...
