The Patagonian ice field and park is shared between Argentina and Chile. For my next adventure I crossed into Chile to complete The W Trek. I spent the first day in Puerto Natales hiring gear, buying supplies and gathering information about the walk. Typically The W is completed in five days, but after the briefing we decided we would do it in four days. Day one we took a bus to the park entrance then a 30 minute boat trip across Lake Pehoe to Paine Grande. This is where ...

After an early breakfast we boarded a covered boat owned by our hotel for a two hour ride to the Serrano Glacier. With our guide Nancho, Ernesto and captain Ivan we headed out on a trip which ultimately ends in failure quite often due to the changing water conditions. There are four distinct stretches of water that they have to navigate to reach the glacier and anyone of the four can get quite rough causing the boat to have ...

... been a perfect day for sunbathing and swimming, if only each beach wasn’t occupied by a million wasps attacking people the second they got out of their cars… unfortunately each stop was just a short photo stop, and then back into the safety of the car. The night was spent in San Martin de los Andes, a tiny sleep village at the end of the 7 lakes…as it was off season there was absolutely noone there ...

We had a fairly relaxing morning in El Calafate, We'd planned it as another rest/recovery day for Nadine. Over breakfast we decided that the fact that Nadine was struggling to breathe and still coughing badly meant that she should probably see a doctor. With that in mind we concluded that Nadine wouldn't be able to ride until she had fully recovered and that it would best if she met us in Puerto Natales. Once we had booked her on to a bus for the next day we hurriedly ...

... region. Basically flat with straight roads. Typically travelling at 120 kph. Fine and temps 20 to 30 degrees C. Dangers: guanacos (4 legged silly animals), Nandoos (same but on 2 legs) and boredom. The wind did not seem so bad this time but we have been getting started early each day.

The biggest change since 2009 is the amount of paved road. From Bariloche to Gobenador Gregores we only had some 20 km of ripio (gravel ...
