Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Albert 1er Nice
Excellent location
Excellent location to explore nice!! The hotel was ok, room standard but cleaned daily. Upon arrival the staff were most helpful in where to go and see in nice and any queries we had again most helpful! Got a taxi from the airport for 35 euros but on the way back got the bus across the gardens by the casino for 3 euros each!! Superb location though!
It's simple, don't stay here!!
This place must be the worst in Nice. Here's my experience of the Albert 1er.
-Arrived well after check-in time to learn that our room was not ready. 2 hours later we made our way up stairs (lift was out of order) to find the triple room that we booked was a twin with an extra cot. Absolutely no room to move, get changed or even open the wardrobe!!! I voiced my concerns with management as was informed that nothing could be done. It took over 20min to get them to even admit they had given us a twin with an extra cot.
-Upon returning to our room later that night we found that the electricity was not working. Back down the stairs to reception, where I was told nothing could be done for at least 2 hours! I eventually convinced him to lock the doors of the hotel and fix the problem. After almost 30 min he admitted that he couldn't fix it. Again I requested an alternative room (with electricity please!!). We were told that one double room was available, however as he was the only staff member on duty, if we wanted it, we would have to carry the folding bed up 3 flights of stairs ourselves (well after midnight and a few drinks, still 25c +), so we stayed in our dark room. Refused to provide candles of safety grounds!!!
The Albert 1er is clearly run and staffed by people with absolutely no concern for their clients comfort, welfare or enjoyment. The air-conditioning is a joke. Rooms are small and in desperate need of decoration. Beds old and lumpy. However, it must be said, for the price the location is fantastic but I would have preferred sleeping rough in the park over the road!
Bottom line, if you value electricity, room to move, getting what you paid for, comfort, cleanliness, professionalism or friendliness don't stay here!!!
Do Not Stay Here
All we needed was 10 minutes to realize this hotel completely misrepresented itself in all advertising. It is DEFINITELY NOT a 3 star hotel - I've stayed in 1 star hotels in better condition. The room had peeling paint, flies, a flimsy foam mattress, the worst air conditioning system I've ever seen and the rudest hotel staff I have ever encountered. We went to Hotel Massena around the corner after a terrible experience with the front desk.
Superb location
This hotel is in THE perfect position - opposite the Jardins Albert 1er, 100m from the Prom des Anglais and 500m from the Cours Saleya where all the markets are. The Opera House is also just around the corner and you can walk to the Place Massena in under 5 mins. As the hotel faces west towards the gardens and north towards Place Massena it is not really worth paying for the seaview rooms as they are all side sea view only. Altho the hotel is on a noisy corner the rooms are double glazed and noise is minimal with windows shut. I can't comment on the air-con as we didn't use it. Rooms are simply furnished but clean and not dark and dowdy as one other report comments. Carpets looked new. The bathrooms are definitely not less than 3 star - ours had a modern 4 piece suite and was fully tiled and spotless. Ask for a room with new beds - we had 3 rooms in total in our group and the rooms on the 3rd floor had very old beds which were uncomfortable. The breakfast is adequate and varied and includes a hot dish but there is no excuse for not having fresh bread every morning in a city like this. Staff were friendly and speak good English. Don't pay for a taxi to the airport, there is a bus which picks up at the Meridien on the other side of the Jardins Albert 1er and will take you direct for 3.5€ compared to the 30€ the taxi charged to bring us in. I would (and will) go back to this hotel again...unless I could afford the Beau Rivage around the corner!
Will not go back to this hotel
The hotel is rated as 3 star, however, is no more than a 2 star hotel. Rooms are dark and gloomy with old furniture. Beds are so bad you would think they were picked from a garage sale. We stayed there for 2 nights and could not sleep because the air conditioning was not cooling the room. The staff checked the air condition in our room and said that's how it works. When I asked why the air condition in the lobby works so well, the receptionist said, "This uses a different system. You can move your bed to the lobby if you like." After 2 nights there I moved to another 3 star hotel one block from Albert 1er, totally renovated, brand new furniture, bright and air conditioned rooms, for a lower price than Albert 1er and it included breakfas too.
What seaview?!
After staying in a beautiful, clean, 3 star hotel in Antibes, we moved to Nice to stay at the Hotel Albert 1er. We had paid months in advance for a 3 bed room with seaviews - we were shown to a double room overlooking the backstreet. After a few choice words to the receptionist, we were moved to another room with a side sea-view. Room full of tatty old furniture and smelt musty. Stayed out until nightfall! They tried to charge us for breakfast we didn't even have the following morning. Glad to go to the airport that day to return home.
Felling HOT HOT HOT!
A bit dumpy from the outside and inside. The best part of the hotel was the air-conditioning, which was just OK. THe first room had none and was an oven, but they did change us to another room. Breakfast very expensive at 11 Euros, considering you have it in an un-airconditioned room with bad French early 1970's decor. If you are budget minded you would do better to stay in a more modest place.AC saved the day as it was 40 degrees during the whole week.Staff was fine. Yes, great location.
Ideal
Rooms are quite small, but clean.Breakfast ok, Staff very helpful, a bit more expensive than other hotels of this quality, but I am willing to pay the extra as you are within 50 yards of the beach,200 yards of the flower market and 5 minutes from numerous shops and cafe/bars. Ihave stayed there 12 times in the last 18 months and I am quite fussy. 24 hour reception staff.
Old-fashioned charm
This place has one of the best locations in Nice, close to the shops, but 100 yards from the beach, and 400 yards from the Old Town. Rooms look out over a park, and 4th-6th floors will also get a good view of the bay. Old fashioned, but rooms are OK (though not luxurious) and decent buffet breakfast (by european standards anyway). Only one lift which was out of action all 4 days we stayed there.
3-star rating, but I'd say more like 2-star. Usual gallic mixture of helpful/unhelpful staff.
Good value for Nice.
