Diego resigns, we visit ruins and drink tequila

... the crisps in Mexico are dunked in a vat of chilli). Then the daughter said she needed a cold beer to wash the crisps down with, and she was not happy when her tour guide said they don't sell beer on the site - damn those unreliable Mexicans for not setting up a bar right next to the sacred cenote! I think she was probably just suffering from shock at having left the confines of her all inclusive resort with swim up bar.

From here we headed to the coast at Playa del Carmen ...

Tequila, it makes me happy

... from New York but he was also kind enough to let me borrow a similar one in the mean time, jolly nice fellow. This means of course that I have to return in February but it`s kind of on the way so not really a problem. I was still feeling rough at about 1300 but felt I had an obligation to se at least something cultural, so I got across to the other end of the city and paid a visit to the Aztec Stadium, scene of the infamous hand of god in 86. Got a guided tour for a measly ...

In the beginning......

... had left town about the same time as the Aztecs. As I started (slowly) climbing I could hear the woman behind me hyperventilating. I hoped she had brought her own defibrillator. When we got to the top of the steps, there was a short scramble over some stones to the top of the pyramid. Hyperventilator commented that they should have built a ramp. Yeah, slacker Aztecs, what were you thinking?! It was then that I noticed she was wearing massive bell bottoms which looked like they ...

Cantankerous Cenote!

... my **** off) at 1.33pm. Antonio had shut up shop and went mad! I thought he was not so endearing then - "well i am leaving your bike here - up to you" as i marched off!

So now, i have had a beer in the Park and may go out for some food. I was going to stay here 3 days, but i am off tomorrow to Cancun - party central! Was going to leave it as i am alone, but thought it has to be done at least for one night! x x x

Day 3: Mi nombre es Optimus Prime

... visits. We found that our planned hostel was closed, so we booked two nights at the Hotel Zaci. It was a bit more expensive, but much nicer. It even has a pool which Lauren and I are excited to try out later.

For dinner, we plan to go this restaurant in another hotel. Our guide book says that it is the best restaurant in town, so we are excited. We´ll probably hit the bed early tonight since tomorrow is CHICHEN ITZA!!! So, that´s all for now. We´ll keep you posted.

The ruins of Coba

... northern Yucatan and the best bit, you are still allowed to climb it. The steps look quite good from afar but when you start the climb you realise no 2 steps are the same. The stone blocks are mostly big enough to get three quarters of your foot on but luckily there is a rope in place to help climbers keep their balance. I'm not saying it's super hard or scary because there were retirerees climbing up but it was a bit of a struggle for me :)

Uxmal, Chichen Itza and Tulum, let's go!

... away. Chichen Itza will have to wait until tomorrow.

Hostel La Candeleria was closed but a man at a cafe recommended Hotel Maria Guadalupe. It was in the LP guide and clean. The 220 for a double price was not so unreasonable and it was only a block away from the bus station. We had dinner at Hosteria del Marques off the parque and decided to visit a nearby cenote tomorrow morning since we're in the area anyways.

There is no way to be in Tulum tonight and no way to

... We found the hotel without any problems and went for a traditional Yucatan meal (I think as long as there is chicken, cheese and mole it is traditional!). We did our first clothes wash in the sink and let it all dry on strings in the room. Very classy!!

The following day (26/09), we got up really early (6am) to go to Chichen Itza, the biggest Mayan archaeological site in Yucatan. We arrived there for 9am, which was great because 1) it ...

Mexico City Round Two

... people of mesoamerica. We each had a research assignment and we all shared what we found later. Our last day in Mexico City we all took the metro and eventually light rail to xochimilco, or the canal district of Mexico City. This area is supposed to be what Mexico City was like when Cortez first discovered Tenochitlan. When we got there we immediately searched for food and we eventually found a stand which turned out ...
