... drive into the forest of Umbra for a picnic.

We drove for about an hour along more of the narrow, winding mountain roads that lead to the state forest. Arriving at the center of the park we found most of the park trails closed ( is October) so we continued on the state forest road and decided to skip the picnic. It took another couple of hours to return to our hotel in Mattinata. Not ...

Then we went downstairs to walk to the Shrine of Saint Padre Pio. When we got there we prayed the rosary in the newer church, the Padre Pio Pilgrim Church, and saw Padre Pio's incorrupt body. Finally we ate dinner at the hotel and went to ...

After another hearty breakfast we went down to the harbour and took the ferry across to San Nicola island, a 5 minute trip. The island is smaller and is dominated by a large castle and the vegetation is completely different, having no trees - just scrub. The only way to get to the other end of the island is up through the small village and the castle. There have been humans living on the islands since about 700BC, and the castle ...
