    The Glacier Express

A travel blog entry by a.baker.abroad on Jun 08, 2015

We woke early in Zermatt to check out, take in one last look around the beautiful little town and jump about the famous Glacier Express train along UNESCO heritage railways to our final destination of St Moritz. Along the way there was endless picturesque scenery from snow capped mountains to summer green fields and typically Swiss towns all along the route. We arrived in St Moritz late in the afternoon and settled into our hostel for another relaxing ...

... back in time. The dominance of the mountains over this city was breathtaking. Hard to believe we're here in real time. We dined in the hotel restaurant in which the meal was poor as it was a set menu. But it's food & fills a hole. At least we're back into Euro territory with no more use for the expensive Swiss franc. I think because we have been so knackered it hasn't mattered but they're definitely not snuggly! Made it down to breakfast within the scheduled 1 hour period and was quite pleased with myself for not being the last person to rock up for a change. Breakfast was very nice and beautifully presented. Started with fresh fruit salad ...

We set out from our hotel at 9.30 to get to the central station Ferrovia for our train at 10.50. Consequently even after taking the ferry from Rialto we were still far to early so hung about. We were on the fast train so made Milan at 1.25 just 5 minutes after the Tirano train left so Joe grabbed a slice of pizza and we hung about til 2.20 for the next one. Off we went past lake Como which was of course lovely. Slowly slowly we made our way into the mountains or as they say la ...

Today is a travel day: picking up our rental car and driving to Tirano on to the border of Italy and Switzerland - so it provides us an opportunity to reflect back on general aspects of the Cruise experience and especially the foodie bits :-)

This was our first cruise with Oceania, and whilst the ship was a little larger than our preference, the great itinerary justified our choice. The upside of having a mid-sized boat (1,200 passengers) is the facilities: great gym ...
