Siena is a very ancient city, said to be named after the Senones, a Celtic tribe from circa 1,000BC. It developed over many centuries on and around three ridges and their intervening valleys, which means that the town has numerous winding lanes, going either up a ridge or down a valley, or (very occasionally) along a ridge.
