Our tour guide/drive Paulo (easy name to remember, right?) arrives as schedule at 9:00 am--and all six of us pile into a very nice Mercedes van--it's easily the most comfortable vehicle we've driven in. Siena is a very ancient city, said to be named after the Senones, a Celtic tribe from circa 1,000BC. It developed over many centuries on and around three ridges and their intervening valleys, which means that the town has numerous winding lanes, going either up a ridge or down a valley, or (very occasionally) along a ridge. There is no shopping centre as such, but all the lanes have numerous small shops, and you never know what is around the corner. ...
