    ... one of the best tables in the house. The setting was just perfect to celebrate the occassion and a bottle Veuve Clicquot to start was just right. A shared plate of melon and proscuitto followed by roast veal for Julie and fillet mignon for Richard, then they presented us with a plate with some small desserts on which they had written in chocolate "Buon Anniversario". On the walk back to our room we lashed out and had a single cone gettato to finish. Just a perfecto evening.

    It's nice to stay somewhere that’s real. Varenna is real.

    We chose this place more or less by accident. We had a few days to kill between ending our cruise in Venice and catching a plane in Zurich, and had heard the Italian lakes district is worth seeing.     We say farewell to Milan with a taxi to the Central Railway Station which is huge, try to purchase tickets from carne machine but it won't accept my credit card, luckily a nice gypsy woman just happened to be looking over my shoulder and offered to help and we get our tickets. Grazie mille, but she doesn't want my thanks as she has just come out of hospital and needs some money. She still had the bandage on her arm! Feeling sorry for her ...
