... cargo vessels. We also passed the Costa Concordia being slowly taken apart in a remote corner of the harbour. There are a large number of palaces and many grand architectural building, set on a host of hills around the city. In contrast there are numerous narrow alleyways between four storey buildings, which open onto small squares where there is usually a bar or cafe.

Nevertheless, we will be happy to move on to the lakes tomorrow.

We found ourselves in Genoa today. We did a hop on hop off double decker bus ride. We found out this is where Christopher Columbus is from and saw many monuments for him and his house!

... spent the next two hours hiking and had the coastal trail completely to ourselves. We enjoyed the challenge of the trail with lots of climbing and rock scrambling, but no burning lungs or legs because of the copious oxygen here! With the oxygen, however, came incredible humidity; at one time, we thought we were seeing the first of the raindrops, but it was only Michael's sweat dripping off his nose as he walked along. We actually did get drenched, but from ...

... the way up the ridge from town. It's a good hours walk up and down steep hills but I loved the exercise and fresh country air. The path cuts through Olive groves which look unchanged through vast amounts of time, no doubt being cared for by generation after generation. Locals have been living and dying here for so long living in similar ways it was a refreshing tonic away from today's hectic big city living.

On route up the hill I ...
