Uzerche... that doesn't sound very french

Set upon the River Vezere and quite pretty due to its 15th and 16th century Maisons a Tourelles, which looks like miniture castles due to their turrets. The rain had stopped for our little walk around the village but started again when we got back to the car - great timing!

Solignac

Stayed last night in a pretty little medieval village of Solignac, right on the town square next to the villages 11th century church, which is on the pilgirmage route - Santiago de Compostela. It had rained last night and was still raining so our wander around was brief! Our plan today was to stop at several little villages in the area, of which they got progressively prettier.

The Tragedy of Oradour

... In addition, a close personal friend of Major Dickmann (the commanding German officer) had been taken prisoner by the Resistance. On Saturday, June 10, Major Dickmann planned his revenge, the destruction of Oradour.

They began their plan at ~ 2 pm. They surrounded the village, allowing no way out. Their pretext was a simple identity check. They rounded up everyone in the village into the ...

Relaxing in the French Sunshine

... ex-pat friends whom we visited for coffee or lunch, and also their extremely amiable French neighbours, who make use of the lack of fences to
wander over and say bonjour, bringing a bunch of leeks, or a basket of beans, or whatever else is thriving on their land that day. It's all very sociable and mutually supportive and a far cry from the stereotype of the ...

Day 13 - Super Nerds and gangsters

Distance covered: 22 miles

We chilled out for the day by taking it easy in an Internet cafe. Well I say Internet cafe, but there was no coffee. Just loads of nerds playing Half life and Warcraft. In fact it was the nerdiest place I had ever been (except the maths help sessions in the uni library.... obviously). Then, about ten grown men (early 30's) came in dressed as soldiers, commandos, and mercenaries. It ...

Day 12 - Stunt Granny

... conciousness. Then she started freaking out because I was speaking English. I left her to the crowd of people. She seemed fine.

At the bike shop it was obvious that I would need a new wheel, which requires a new gearing cassette, tyre, and innertube. 80 euros has seriously hurt the budget. Only 200 pounds left to get to Africa. Whats worse is the chain doesn't fit properly.

... floor. These kids were just goofing around, running over these quotes and not even reading them. A few were in English, such as the one that said, "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it." As these kids pranced over quotes such as this, I felt sick. Maybe they should take the time to read and ponder such a thing, because their behavior was, quite frankly, a little frightening. Anyway, that's all for now. Look for updates from Munich!

Adventure in the countryside, ending in Dournazac

... least we had this trusty little Lonely Planet guide, which recommended a few places around Dournazac and Chateau Montbrun.... Hmmm, they all seemed to be closed... Finally, 'La Taverne'- a place to eat (even though its ~10pm) and sleep (what! no rooms available!). Well, of course it did have a happy ending, but I start with the photos first....

A week back home

... a keratite, nothing serious but a little eye infection which needed to be treated and accessorily a bronchitis which needed attention as well. Last but not least, I had my wisdom teeth removed which, as a lot of you know, is extremely unpleasant and comes with a very slow recovery eating soup and mashed potatoes for days. I should have done that the first day I got back, that may have prevented me from having a funny belly. So basically, enjoying french ...

We went to pick up the van and all went ...

... about the touristy stuff here but have spent the majority of our time learning about day to day life stuff. We have seen how everything about daily life here is really different from the states. From grocery shopping (with Karen Carpenter as backgroud music)to internet cafes (internet is not common in the home here) to riding the commuter trains with the businessmen. We have received an interesting outlook on daily life we couldnt have seen as normal tourists. Au revoir!
