Hot, hot, hot in Lombok!

My first comment was going to be along the lines of 'It's so bloody hot in Lombok’ – but blow me down, we just finally had a massive dump of rain which dropped the temperature by a good 6-7 degrees I think!

There is apparently a heat wave going through parts of Indonesia, including Lombok. This trip was planned for the first month of the rainy season, but we have seen very little rain so far – maybe an hour when we first arrived ...

What a view: Amazing Rinjani

... so tired that we forgot to pear over the other side of the crater rim to see what was there. So we just sat, waited for our guides to pitch the tent, and recovered.

Suddenly, just as the sun was starting to set, the clouds began to clear. A view opened up over the top of the mountain which reminded us why we came all this way. It was stunning. Remembering where we were, I motioned to Kate to come the final 10 meters to the top. Exhausted, weary, and ...

Not the sweeping beaches Lonley Planet tells of.

... people drink in Indonesia, instead they smoke weed or take mushrooms, and although it’s illegal it is really quite common and not really clamped down on by the authorities (unless you are a foreigner bringing drugs in, then it‘s the death penalty).

Our last day was spent deciding what to do next, and after we decided on trekking Rinjani we spent the rest of the day organising it before getting some sleep for the early start the next day.

Scammed! and pissed up arguements!!
We had decided to make a short detour to the Gili islands off the island of Lombok. First we would stay in Lombok and a small place called Sengiggi. It was an early start leaving from Ubud and taking a shuttle bus to Padang Bai where we would then catch a ferry to Lombok. We had booked this as a tour from one of the Travel tour agents in Ubud called Hamman. We arrived at Padang bai about 2 hours before the ferry was due to depart and so we was shepherded into a café by the tour ...

... income from farmer. Not including children who couldn't go to school because of that. I'll put few pictures to show how bad and awful it was. I felt sorry from deep of my hearth. After what happening as usually the company always blame each other which false was it (imagine if the oil the one came up they will shut their mouth). People becoming homeless, no job no income. Seem also government wash their hand. No compensation yet coming from the company to pay who ...

The Gili Islands

... better of me and it took me a while to get used to it. The next task was to physically get me under water. Geoff was loving it and flying off on his own which you can only imagine made me feel completely easy. He soon learned when I made him wear the baby harness. ´´Heel Geoff Heeeeel´´ All signed of course cos we were under water. There were turtles (big things that move slow) and little Nemos and big scary things with tanks on their ...

The Gilis

... Kuta is the Phuket of Indonesia, if ya know what I mean.

My second reason for choosing the Gilis was their location. Because the second monsoon is in full effect here in Indo it rains nearly every afternoon. You can clearly see a pattern where the clouds start building up on the west side of the island and eventually dump their loads on the islands below. Because Kuta Beach is on the ...

Mount Rinjani

... we going to make it in time or would we be caught short by a few hundred yards, slowing microwaving in the morning rays on the mountain side? Ipan had warned us that the going would get much tougher on the approach to the summit, the final 400m were, he said, a case of two steps forward one step back. This tells only half a story. The incline of this final stretch was 45 degrees at best though steeper at times and the route morphed from dust layered earth to a loose scree of loose ...

Life and death in paradise

... due to regular moistening of the pedal extremities from water exposure or sports, particularly in enclosing footwear such as the Keen's sandals I'm currently wearing. Moisture collected whilst snorkelling or alighting from a dinghy on the beach can't escape, so layers of skin weaken and peel off the bottom of the foot - leaving a gammy sole and a trail of dead skin. It's not painful or debilitating, just ugly and a ...
