From Grenada to St Martin

Hi everyone!, So far in 2009 we only updated our cruising blog when we were in Dominica. For those of you who have loads of time, we have now included an update with the highlight of our stops on route from Grenada to St Martin. Read the intro for starters; we put a 'star' next to the entries that make better reading, either for the tale they tell or for a curious observation we must detail. We apologise for having so few photos - we got really lazy! Doesn't mean that everyday ...

Beautiful Antigua

Today we arrived in St. John's, Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda. We debarked the ship and walked a bit until we reached what seemed to be some sort of plaza, where a local was balancing a pineapple on her head while grooving to music, hoping to make a few dollars off of us tourists. Later in the day, we took a tour of the island and saw two gorgeous beaches: Dickinson and Runaway.<br>

... to see some new beaches, and so far it's payed off. A few weeks ago I went to Gopher Beach in Barbados which was very nice, and had a bar right there on the beach with cheap (and good) local beer. Again this Wednesday in Barbados I went clear across the island (about 45 min drive) to a beach called Crane Beach for the HUGE Crane resort there. The beaches were quite large with reddish sand, and the waves were amazing. I took a little boogie-board I bought and surfed most of the ...

... explained that during the passage the boats on the ARC encountered one serious tropical storm and one hurricane. Despite forewarnings via the ARC communications net, Oystercatcher XXV did not divert as the others did and one night at 2:30 AM, moving without sails up, they were dismasted. The crew had to cut off all rigging including their huge in-boom furled main. Last Mike had heard the yacht had headed back to the Canaries for repairs. However, that morning both Al and Mike saw ...

We found Eugene (Horizon dock manager who had taken me on a powerboat tour of Antigua anchorages on my January 2004 visit) and had a short visit. We learned from them that the active Montserrat volcano had started to rumble that morning shortly after our departure. Timing is everything! That evening we had a ...
