Becoming Lawrence of Arabia

After a short drive from Aqaba we arrived at Wadi Rum in the early evening at our Bedouin camp, Zawaideh, and got our tents that were composed of two to three cots and mosquito nets. For being August, there weren't too many bugs around, but I am sure they keep them just in case. The camp itself is much nicer than you would imagine. For my idea of camping is a pop up tent in the middle of nowhere. Well, you have the middle of nowhere, but this is more like an elaborate camp site with permanent...

Wild colours paint the sands

Finally into the Wadi Rum! I love unusual scenery so this is the part of the trip I'd been most looking forward to. We got on our new giant tour bus (complete with an on-bus bathroom even though we weren't allowed to use it) where we each had our own pair of seats and drove a few hours into the desert. We arrived at the Bedouin camp where we would be spending the night and got set up in our tents. The camp reminded me of a military camp, the tents were lined up one next to the other and we ha...

Beautiful Petra and the beautiful Bedouin!

What an awesome day! It was hard work in parts but I had so much fun. We got up at 5:30am to have a shower (we weren't allowed to have one directly after the Turkish Bath) and we left the hotel at 7am. By about 7:30am we were on our way into Petra (only after going past the Indiana Jones Souvenir Shop). Petra was built in the 3rd C BC by the Nabataeans who carved palaces, temples, tombs, storerooms and stables into the sandstone cliffs. The stone in Petra is what makes this place so extraordi...

Der Teufel ist Bedouine

The Lost City of Petra

... Guinness Book of Records) but it flies not the Jordanian flag but the flag of the Arab Revolt. Whilst I went on a tour to Petra Christine stayed in Aqaba as she wouldn't be able to do all the walking required. We drove out through the city and out into the desert. We climbed up quite high through standstone hills in lovely shapes and colours. This area often gets snow in winter and the desert here is very stoney. Just outside Aqaba ...

Our Excursion to Wadi Rum

Our trip to Wadi Rum was an optional extension which was terribly distant and also expensive.
However, the scenery was beautiful as it took us to a Jordanian desert with wonderful cliffs and red dune deserts. This area was also where part of the movie Lawrence of Arabia was filmed, George's favorite all time movie!
Reaching the half way point of my trip.

... the desert all day long. Sometimes you just want to be lazy and this was one of those days. I was more than happy to sit my ass in the back seat of a jeep and just look out the window for the whole day. There were 13 of us on the trip. We had people from Brazil, Belgium, Ireland, Poland and Britain spread across two jeeps that were going to take us through Wadi Rum. There was one guy from Ireland who was quite chatty and just couldn't shut ...

My trip to the south of Jordan- Part I

... breath, we rolled down the red sand to the bottom! It was incredible! At the bottom was a "bayet shar" tent where a Bedouin man made us delicious tea while we shook the sand out of our clothes. I couldn't stop smiling haha. Afterwards, we got back in the truck and drove to another mountain, where we climbed to watch the sunset over the mountains. It was the most beautiful sunset I had ever seen, and even made me tear up a little. Sadly, my brand new camera was acting up a lot ...

Aqaba

... wives were sitting down) and you also had a woman who thought she was the hottest woman in the room and the best dancer in the room (neither of which were true but she was hilarious to watch) in addition you had a man trying to do the dabkeh with drunk foreign women and it just didn't work out. So the weekend was very relaxing, we had a lot of fun, and it was nice to see the southern border of Jordan and realize all that it has to offer in the future.
