Hellish travels! Ode to Johnny Walker!

... of prayer time. Got my bags all in one piece and faced a few questions because my bags were coming from Korea via Hong Kong and I had my hard drives of photography. I guess they had experiences with people trying to bring in illegal movies etc. on their hard drives (porn? other questionable material?) from those countries.

Ali from Education Experts is not there to pick me up. Some pictures of my first weekend

I apologise for the lack of actual information on this page. It has been a fairly hectic few days. Needless to day, I have already been in contact with most of you by now and updated you on how the new job was going.

I, along with another colleague, rented a rather batter, manual gear, Hyundai Accent and took it for a spin for about 24 hours around Riyadh and also out to Ad-Diriyiah. My arrival in KSA

... already about 5pm. I had arranged to be picked up by the manager in Riyadh (called Waleed) later that evening and it was he who would deal with any issue. By the time the message was passed on it was too late to sort it out. It later transpired that the electricity bill hadn’t been paid and ironically the monthly payment was due the day of my arrival.

Farj picked me up at 7pm and took me to the Riyadh office of al-Rajhi Company (for Human Resources and Development ...

... ladies behind us, clearly delighted. One was trying to translate what my daughter was saying and they were all smiling and giggling. As we left they were trying to engage my daughter, asking her name, etc., but she is a woman who knows her own mind and isn't given to small talk no matter how much you try, so she kept walking without a glance back.

We decided not to stop in Riyadh but drive straight through, and we hit Kharj just before sunrise.

I particularly enjoy the odd assortment of rocky outcrops -- amazing how these jagged towers are shaped by nature.

Overnight in Riyadh

We reached Riyadh close to midnight. My husband's aunt's (by marriage) brother lives in Riyadh, and we usually sleep at their villa and have a meal before heading out again for the longer segment of our journey. Riyadh is a huge city; unfortunately it has only been a stopover point for us, we haven't had the opportunity to spend much time exploring.

After dinner and a night's rest we left, making a short stop at Starbucks for a Frappucino. I ...

Trying to navigate a trolley into the small 4-bed rooms of the regular wards, with sitters sleeping on the floor next to them, with all the curtains closed permanently because they are female patients can be lots of fun! :p At all times you have to be mindful of the cultural aspects of looking after the Muslim patient. 5 times a day the ...

... illuminated palm trees and glitzy signage EVERYWHERE) We wanted to go to the bookstore accross the road, because thats where they sell the USB modems, but that was an experience in itself! There were absolutely NO pedestrian crossings, and this was a MAJOR highway to cross - there was no way in hell i was going to try to cross that road. We ended up having to catch a cab in order to get to the other side and back again!!! Then, when we got there, it was just on prayer time, and ...

The Long Way Home...

... It began to rain. Wow - rain! We found a hotel in a small town, but there were cockroaches. James and the ladies elected to stay, but we, brave souls, detesting cockroaches the way we do, opted to drive on and look for something around Medinah airport. Madinah itself is the second holiest city in Islam, hence in Saudi Arabia, Mecca (or Makkah, as it is called locally) being the first. Non-Muslims are not allowed within 10 kilometers of the city and there is a ring road around it ...
