... the English menu and asked the chef if he knew where it was. I decided not to play the ignorant tourist (this time ;)) and ordered in Japanese, from the Japanese (picture-less!) menu. I was so proud that she understood me at once, without having to resort to gestures or the translator app! One small step for man, one giant leap for an expat. I think she was just as pleased as I was and she returned to the chef to tell him he could stop looking for the menu.

... and actually helped some people and learned a lot. That's all I hoped for. Anyway, this may be my last post until I get back to America because tomorrow morning when I leave I won't have wifi to use my phone. ... the Himeji Castle. This astounding castle is centuries old and was home to the numerous emperors of the country. The town of Himeji itself is really quite adorable. The houses are all set upon tiny, narrow streets and were often very old. We spent our day visiting the amazing white and blue castle and visiting the various city parks (with koi fish filled ponds and large cherry blossom trees). ... Himeji Castle has 7 different levels, each connected by an increasingly steep set of stairs. If you've ever climbed up the stairs in the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, then you'll understand exactly what's it like. The rooms were mostly empty, so it was hard to gauge how they might have been used. There was a small shrine on one of the upper levels.

... no attendant to tell us not to touch (not that we did). They also have an Andy Warhol (Flowers) and some of David Hockney's work as well as a number of other post-Modern artists. Unfortunately the Warhol was hanging in the restaurant but not to be daunted we walked in amongst the diners and viewed it anyway.
