... it to the Visitor Information Station at 9,000 ft, but from there to the summit a 4-wheel drive is required not so much for traction on the gravel road but for the gearing. The lack of oxygen and the steep ascent mean engines can easily overheat on the way up and brakes on the way down. For this reason, we booked a tour with a local tour company in Hilo, and met up with them at the Mauna Kea access road turn-off off of Highway 200. Climbing on Highway 200 we ...

... the Halema'uma'u overlook at the Jagger museum. We also did a very short 1-mile round-trip hike to the Kilauea Iki crater. That crater burst open in a fiery inferno in 1959 and turned the whole floor into a bubbling lake of molten lava. Some of its fountains reached record heights of 1900 ft, and 20,000 people a day flocked to the park to see this craziness, with cars sometimes backed up for 10 miles. What remains of that today is a huge black crater that is STILL steaming ...

Day 12 - San Fran and the Giants

A travel blog entry by samfader on Sep 12, 2014

Self guided walking tour of San Francisco today, starting in China Town, wandering the streets, all you can eat dim sums for $5.99 for lunch, and a quick squiz down Ross Alley for Ash to try and remember the scenes set there in Indiana Jones. No such luck. At lunch we decided to get tickets for the SF Giants Vs LA Dodgers baseball game, and made a quick detour to the library to print them. The afternoon consisted ...

      Day 10 - Kona - Oakland

A travel blog entry by samfader on Sep 10, 2014

A quiet day today, in transit from the big island to Oakland, time to explore the mainland! Plane was delayed, so finally got on a train at 12:25am, took a wrong turn walking to our next airbnb accommodation and made it at 1:30am. Staying with the Pêna family in Oakland for 4 nights. Had a terrible sleep thanks to constant train horns, hopefully I'll get used to ...

... you can't quite see. The crater rim itself and gas cloud was very impressive though! Hard to comprehend it's size. We also drove down the Chain of Craters drive and did a few little walks. The desolation trail wasn't exactly pretty but shows the force of the eruptions when they do happen - a whole rainforest section just gone, and a beautiful view overlooking the crater itself! We also did a 4km hike to ...
