A short stroll into town for breakfast at Mr Ed's Bakery. We never found out if it was the horse or not, because Ed was on sick leave. We had an interesting meal of egg, sausage and a biscuit! The egg was omelette style, sausage like a burger and the biscuit was a scone. We then went to Volcanoes National Park - about an hour's drive. Traffic was busy, particularly in the park, because it was Memorial Day across the US and ...

As the day came to a close, we arrived at our final stop: the Mauna Kea Visitor Center. This was probably my favorite part of the entire day. Mauna Kea is one of the dormant volcanoes on the island, and it takes quite the car ride to get up to the Visitor Center. We watched the sunset, and then we were treated to the best stargazing I have ever experienced. The sky ...

    Hilo to Volcano 50K

A travel blog entry by starvoyager on Jan 03, 2015

The Hilo to Volcano 50K. A grueling run up the mountain, from sea level to 4000ft, all on asphalt and pavement, with cars and trucks streaking past you. You start at the bay of Hilo, at a place called Coconut Island. Ultra runners have the option of starting early (earlier than the 6AM official start) so they can reach ...
