    ... Lava flowing from the Pu'u O'o vent recently reached the town of Pahoa, about 5 miles from where we are staying in Keaau. Following a 2008 vent opening at the Kilauea caldera, a lava lake glows there every night and draws visitors here after sunset. The 11-mile Crater Rim drive skirts the rim of the caldera, but about 1/3 of it has been closed since the 2008 eruption.     Up at 5:00am so we could eat breakfast and drive to Hilo Airport for our Helicopter Tour. It was an absolutely gorgeous morning. Beautiful drive up over the mountain to Hilo. It was so clear that Mary will need to through out about 100 pictures previously taken because todays shots will be from clear blues sunny skies.

    Today was the day to travel to the western part of the Big Island. Up across the mountain in the middle of the state we traveled 1 1/2 hrs to Hilo. We turned into Hilo Airport and went to the tour counter to see if we could take a helicopter tour today. As it turns out due to combined weight of the 4 of us they were not able to fit us in on any tours today so we are scheduled to fly on Sunday.

    Hilo is an interesting place because it's so close to the Volcanoes National Park. The volcano isn't spewing fire and brimstone at the moment but we did see molten lava from a helicopter with no doors. Yes, we did and it was amazing.
