Conveniently close to the airport, and located by a bus route with direct access the central Helsinki. The room had a kitchenette and was clean and comfortable. Staff was very helpful with local information and bus schedules, and let me leave my bags while I went into town for a while, then drove me back to the airport.

Spending half a day in Helsinki at the end of a ten-day trip in the Balkans may seem strange, but it was because of the airline. The cheapest and most convenient travel option was to take Finnair, which had a layover in Helsinki between Tokyo and Vienna. As it seemed impossible to have a short layover on both the flight out and the return, I …

... We arrived in Stockholm the next morning with only one, final journey ahead of us. It was a bittersweet feeling, knowing that Finland was the last European country we would be visiting (for now), and it was certainly sad saying goodbye to people with no idea when or if we would ever cross paths again (something we had been doing daily for over a week at that point), but the journey, both to Finland and in the broader context of our time in Europe, was something we were both grateful for. ...

Urk, so much for wishful thinking. I was wide awake at 4am today and despite numerous attempts to fall back asleep, I ended up just lying there and cursing my jet lag! Breakfast didn't start until 6.30, so needless to say, I was the first person in the dining room when it opened. The cook there didn't speak English so I guess asking for poached eggs instead of fried was a bit of a waste of time.

First stop, the German-Danish border, right? Wrong! In 2011 when we travelled by ferry from Helsinki to Travemunde, we passed through Lübeck, which is an old Hansa town like Hamburg and Bremen, and at the time, we said that we would have to come back. So, at Nick's suggestion, we went to Lübeck to explore that old city. Sadly, Lübeck didn’t do well during the 1939-45 RAF Urban Renewal program, but some of the old town managed to survive, including ...

We embarked on time and arrived at Helsinki airport at 1.30pm local time. Because we had a 10 hour wait we went into Helsinki for lunch. We walked through the city centre and down to the wharfs where there were markets. The stuff was very good but quite ...
