Day 11 - A stroll through the Grand Canyon

Scott

Today and yesterday have been the best days of the trip so far, absolutely incredible. Yesterday, the meteor crater was fascinating. Some interesting facts for you - did you know that 'Meteor crater' is actually an incorrect term, you see, a meteor is a huge mass that floats past the earth's surface, whereas a Meteorite is when the meteor makes contact with the earth itself. I had no idea before, but this meteorite (which hit earth over 50,000 years ago) was made from 92% iron! Y...

North Rim, Grand Canyon

We left Las Vegas this morning en route to the North Rim, Grand Canyon. It's about a five hour drive which is incredibly beautiful and diverse. The topography changes so often that the five hours seemed to fly by. The altitude is over 8,000 feet, so our ears popped during the drive. We saw a beautiful red-trailed hawk flying overhead at one particularly beautiful point in the road. That was the only hawk I have seen so far. The drive to the North Rim is vastly different than the South Rim. It...

... made a refreshing change be staying in a nice little town away from the dust of the desert.

23/10/2209 - We woke up in the morning and enjoyed the free doughnuts and pastries (and Earl Grey tea!), that the motel provided for breakfast. We had hoped to stay another night at Quail Lodge, but they were fully booked, so we checked out and drove down the road to another 1950s motel, Parry Lodge. We reserved a room and then drove on to Zion National Park. Two couples we had ...

The stars were absolutely beautiful tonight you could see clusters of stars like we haven’t seen since Australia. We’re packing up early tomorrow for the long drive (via Salt Lake City) to Idaho Falls.

Link about Zion

http://www.epinions.com/con tent_150759837316

Tomorrow we will visit nearby Zion National Park, and on Sunday Bryce Canyon National Park.

Also of note: change of plans. We will no longer be visiting the Petrified Forest, but instead will continue into Colorado to Mesa Verde National Park, before heading down into Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Talk to you all later.!

... with both sets of folks. Moms and Dads: we can't wait to see you again later in the summer in Jackson and Courtenay! Our camera was on the fritz, but we were able to snap this one shot of the Grand Canyon that day. It's hard to believe that the Colorado River gushes a whole mile below where we were standing!

Day 70-73: Zion National Park

Day 70 - Friday, August 29, 2008 - Bryce Canyon NP to Zion NP Today is the day we left Bryce Canyon NP for Zion NP. Before we left, we drove to the end of the park, hiked the Bristlecone Pine Trail and took in the morning scenery. We did see a few bristlecone pines, the longest living things in the world. The temp was 47 degrees when we woke up but quickly warmed to 60 ...

Leaving Zion... *snif*

... hold on to! Needless to say it was both thrilling and beautiful! On Saturday, David having wrapped his leg in two layers of garbage bags and more duct tape than you can imagine, we hiked the narrows of the Virgin River. This was another very interesting hike that required us to hike (or swim) up the river which ran through a narrow slot canyon with huge awesome cliffs towering above us on ...

... and said "only 380 to go". Great. A quite bite to eat at Ruby's Inn before we head off. Ruby's was the scene of a famous incident six years ago involving Cass and a "bear". Ask her about it sometime. Then you might want to ask me. We seem to have differing recollections for some reason (and we both laugh about it). No bears this time. We had planned a short detour on our way to the next stop, via Kanab in Utah. This is an out of the way small corner of ...
