... very patient with other people in the car. Anyway we got there. The weather was not ideal for much exploring but did a quick look around and had lunch then onto Vaals. We arrived a bit late to go up the tower as it was running in winter closing hours but we got the idea. ... backwoods town doing about 110k (which is about 65-70 mph) so you better look both ways! Speaking of speed limits. One minute you are going 70, then it jumps to 90, but don't get comfortable, because 5 seconds later it jumps down to 50, but by the time you down shift to slow down, it's back up to 90 again! A few other observations about driving over here. Yield signs are just for looks. No one obeys them. Also, they have roundabouts about every 10 miles. ...

... go along ancient industrial train routes. They have the advantage to not be too steep neither in ascent nor descent. You may see remainders along the route. Quite some racing bikers use the track, the tarmac usually is in really good state.

... airport, but from memory little has changed. There are no new buildings, and it seems the new owners have just used what buildings are there. The terminal building was where my Dad worked; the NAAFI is still there, as are the guardhouse, some married quarters, cinema and chapel, which is now a museum dedicated to the friendship between the local community and those who has served at Laarbruch. ... Moments later the siren of an ambulance could be heard approaching.



Dinner of kebabs for the girls was certainly less eventful, but as we returned to the hotel afterwards we found the square still occupied by the ambulance which had by then been joined by the police.



The girls went to bed and Mike and I, who didn’t feel like kebabs for dinner ducked downstairs for a bowl of minestrone and a glass of red wine.
