... my racing bicycle with me. Took me 2h to take it apart and stick it in a big box; a box that can hardly fir into my car. I'm still hoping that they have some kind of hill in Dubai I can ride up.
But OK, I'm ready. The flight is booked and the count down has begun. A bit of stress and a ton of eager anticipation for the big unknown. Time to say goodbye to the loved ones.
I managed to fit in a quick day trip to Lens to see the Louvre outpost there and also connect with a doctoral student I met last summer. We met there, went to the Louvre, had lunch, and then walked to the top of one of "les terrils" and drank some champagne. It was a lovely day all around. I am fond of coal mining towns because of my own geneology. The town has preserved these large coal mountains as a reminder of the hard work and sacrifice of the coal miners.
While in Belguim we decided to
visit the Flanders Fields and Tyne Cott Cemetery. We had to catch a
couple of trains. The ticket lady told us the platform for the
connection, which we got on headed off again. It wasn't until we got to
the end of the train line that we realized we had gone 45 minutes in the
wrong direction… Oh well back on the train we got, this one was quite
nice, a little newer than the last and maybe ...
... had already left. I asked about three information people and I finally found the next train I had to take was in one hour. I bought a sandwich and was about to start waiting but then I decided I might need a new ticket for the new train. So I waked around trying to figure that out for about an hour only to find out that I didn't need one. I got on my train, which was really full, and went home. I gave my host family the meringues and they loved ...

Yorkshire guy we met for a while, then played cards and some others joined (an Aussie, Canadian and Chinese girl) which was fun and learnt a couple of new games, then Meg decided she was too tired so went to bed (at about 11) and I went on a roof kind of thing with the people I was playing cards with and some others (brazilians) who I chatted with for a while before going to bed, ready for our last full ...
