... and miles of gently rolling hills, with fields of wheat and barley and stands of trees and the church spires of small villages. It is unbelievably peaceful and beautiful. It is very strange to contrast it with the photos of the land during the war, with nothing green or growing anywhere, just some blasted tree stumps now and then. The land, at least, as healed. (Although every year a couple tons of WWI debris is dug up or surfaces, including human remains ...

Today we headed out to Fromelles to check out the Australian Memorial and other sites. Again the futility of war hits you from every angle.

... package to those who stayed at least two days this winter. The package included reduced entries to some museums, a free drink at the local Flanders Fields Museum and 25€ off an evening meal. Back at the hotel we had time to refresh in our room and then enjoyed a wonderful dinner of carrot soup followed by rack of lamb. This had to be amongst the best food we have eaten thus far on our holiday -even better with the huge discount. A few Belgian ...

... a little pre occupied. People are running around busy and few people look happy – not very many smiles. I took lots of pictures – I know that’s a shocker. I appreciate Will’s patience with me because I randomly stop and sometimes it takes him a while to notice. As long as he doesn’t join into someone else’s family and start talking away thinking it’s me he should be ok. After dropping off a few belongings ...
