Opatija was developed as a resort town
for the aristocracy of the Hapsburg empire so it has had wonderful
public works projects along the foreshore. This includes the
Lungomare, a 13 km long elegant public walkway along the shoreline.
Everywhere else the seashore is alienated by private dwellings and
massive hotels that like to make their bit of seashore ...
... It had been cooked on a hotplate
with lightly cooked garlic and parsley on top. Quite oily but really
good olive oil. Wonderful fresh ingredients cooked simply and well.
A memorable meal. It appeared that they did not do coffee and sweets
just the fish. It was pretty economical too at around A$45 for the 2
of us with a half litre of wine.
After our wonderful lunch we meandered
... shabby. I was dog tired but we went out exploring Kensington High Street and gawking at it all. It is a culture shock after the peace and quiet and space of the mountains. We ambled back to the Crown and Sword, a pub across from the hotel. It has free wifi compared to pay wifi at the hotel. We had a pint and salad with chicken. Yummy! ... been a fabulous experience. The landscape and scenery was spectacular. The HF leaders were wonderful and made everything seamless. The hotels and food were amazing. The weather was fab. And the new friends are absolutely wonderful. I never expected to visit Montenegro and Croatia, but hey, when opportunity knocks you open the door. Positive all the way. You should try it yourself. ... town just about closed down. Foliage and tree debris was flying everywhere. At 11, a few of us started out heading south all along the edge of the ocean. There is a well maintained double wide sidewalk that hikers, and bicyclists use. Only us this morning. The sea was a frenzy. Whitecaps and surf pounding.
