The balcony is just what we wanted with a view of the caldera and no-one passing in front. Today we went on a boat trip to the new volcano that is growing in the centre of the caldera. It is called Nea Kameni and first appeared above the water in197BC, so about 1500 years after the massive blow out that destroyed the Minoans. It has erupted several times since ...

Back on the trail we strolled for another hour stopping in shops and admiring the new astounding view of the same water ...

... lava and ash to other parts of the island. The center of the island became a crater that is now filled with the beautiful Aegean Sea. At the top of the remaining rim of the island is the Caldera and built into the cliffs at the top of the Caldera are stunningly white washed dwellings, shops, and restaurants. No idea how they were built into the mountainside because it is all so steep and shops and restaurants are literally stacked on top of and wedged in ...

... with spectacular views of the bay below. The white washed buildings against the backdrop of the bright blue sea are very photogenic. We immediately decided to take the cable car down to the dock as we had not had any lunch and had to be back on board by 5pm. As we walked to the cable car we were quite surprised to find that there was a line-up for the cable car. It took us an hour to get through the line and ...
