The day my bag went for a tour of Goa

... at the registration numbers of all the Kadamba buses that rolled in. Even after all the sacrilege wee committed yesterday, I still prayed. A drunk guy came up to mme and started chatting to me, holding my hand for long periods of time, asking “ Have you drunk yet? You must! Enjoy the tax free status that Goa enjoys! I must enquire, how was your experiences of India so far?” I told him good, but I lost my bag with my passport in it. “Oh F**k! That's ...

... evidence of wealth amongst the usual Indian street scenes, with a few luxury cars on the roads and yachts in the harbour. Presumably these belong to the holidaying Mumbai elite, although I don't know for sure. treating myself to a tasty dinner and even a glass of wine (one of my first drinks in India, aside from the boozey night in Rishikesh) overlooking the harbour, I returned for an early night to the hotel. True to family hotel form, there was ...

Goa in Sixty Seconds

... I said I'd get my own but the taxi driver insisted we could all fit in. If you've ever seen one of these you'll know that it's about right for one person, a struggle for two but for three (and Wolfgang is a big fella) and all with luggage including my backpack it was a nightmare! But the taxi driver insisted and we had a good laugh chatting on our way into town. Even if it was rather uncomfortable and at times bicycles were overtaking us. And the place is ...

... middle bunks in that section. The window was open next to my head, so I couldn't hear him. The man in the berth next to me didn't snore at all. All he did was pierce the air every hour or two with a staccato **** loud enough to make a schoolboy jealous. He can't be asleep, I thought to myself, he's putting too much effort into those *****. First impressions of Paniji, and of Goa; this place is ...

Time warps and curve balls

... guest houses, and their little beach bar/restaurants. Foreigners sit and drink beer, eat overpriced 'tiger prawns' and generally shake their heads with a practiced, and rude, "no" to the ladies of the beach selling their wares: silks and cottons, sarongs, cloths, clothes, bangles and trinket stuff. Lined along the front of the beach are the fishermen, and their wooden boats. My first morning, I head down to the beach, keen to catch the sunrise, the early rays on the historic Shore ...

I"m in heaven... I mean... in Goa!

... idea what the food was. I haven't been here long enough to know what a idli is... But it was fun to watch what the locals are doing and copy them. After my first cup of chai, I was going to ask my neighbour where to put the cup. I was just ready to say the first word when he opened the window and threw all is plastic plate and ustensils outside... Oh! I guess I didn't have to ask anymore.... Yeah ...

Enjoying our last few days of Goa

... firecrackers are being set off all around you (you really do have to dodge them) it was brilliant, and they also enjoyed us joining them and watching, and then they all pick up their offerings and walk into the sea, and release their offerings to the sea, and then are all singing and dancing in the sea, we went in the sea with them and it was ace, another excellent memory. Then we all went back onto the beach, and the fireworks and crackers were still going off ...

... was narrowly avoiding a scam for which Royal Resorts was ultimately responsible. On the way to breakfast one morning (like some of the long-stayers here we habitually breakfast at Palmira's, where everyone seems to know everyone else) we were stopped by a man on a moped. We won't give his name in case he decides to change his ways. He gave us two scratch cards and then explained that we would need to go to the luxurious five-star ...

Time difference!

... is massive and means that a couple of beers of an evening can waste 3 hours of study which has a knock on effect with the schedule. I'm slightly concerned that when we leave Goa we'll be entering Karnataka, which is supposedly a dry state. A guy in the hotel had to take a bottle of Whiskey from his guide otherwise his guide would have been arrested. Apparently the don't bother checking westerners! He did say you could get beer but it was 2-3 times the price it is here ...
