    ... get a photo of something official to prove I’d actually been in West Virginia! … and then I was in Virginia about 10 minutes later, still on a busy freeway.

    I finally took another break at the Virginia Museum of the Civil War. All I did was get a map, walked around a bit and take a few photos but I did not get back on the freeway. I drove through Harrisonburg and then it was back to secondary roads for me. The terrain ...

    ... food of the frontier'! Corn bread and BBQ, beans and fried chicken, mashed potato and biscuits (which are more like thinner scones than our biscuits) with gravy or stewed tomatoes. It was all really good, hearty food and the atmosphere was great as well! I could just imagine this type of food being eaten on cold, snowy nights by roaring wood fires. Very American, and I enjoyed it :)

    At the southern end of the Shenandoah valley is Charlottesville, the center of Thomas Jefferson's world. We started with a walk around the University of Virginia campus.
