Erster kleiner Abstecher

Mit Tomas bin ich über Trakai nach Kaunas gefahren.
Trakai ist ein kleiner Ort mitten in Seen eingebettet, der berühmt für sein wunderschönes Schloss ist.
Dort gabs dann "litauische Hotdogs", Pelmeni. Gut kommen ursprünglich von einer Art mongolischem Volk, die die Leibwächter von König Vitautas waren, aber sind trotzdem lecker!!!

The balloons of love.

It's a sunny Sunday so we take a train and after approx. 30 minutes we are in Trakai, the land of lakes. Trakai is famous for many things, too many perhaps to actually list them. First thing that strikes me as odd is that everyone leaves the train in a hurry as if it was about to be kidding with calling at the God forsaken railway station in the middle of the woods.

A road to the historic medieval castle winds between ...

Castle, Lakes and Hospital

... This was much more like it. The sun shone, the water was soft and warm, the breeze blew gently and the views were stunning. Nick appeared to be on a mission to row round and round the castle, rather than relax and drift on the lake. We dangled our feet over the side (or foot in Saskia's case) in the cool clear water. It was peaceful.

By this time we were hungry again and we drove round the lake looking for a restaurant, before ending up back at the place ...

Day Two Vilnius and Trakai

... that sucked was forgot my SD card in my computer...so i was SOL, but i had my iPhone Camera. On the way back i took an old train that cost about 6LTs from there. It took about 30-40 mins to get back to the Train station which is a 5 min walk from my hostal. I walked around old town again and then went up the hill to the Three Crosses.. It over looks the whole city...it was good. For dinner i went to a ...

The Castle in Trakai

... the moped, and go to the Castle, cos to be honest this campsite was not great with flies, wasps & cobwebs all over the shop!!Why do they always lie about the campsites in the guides - aaarrggh soooo annoying!! The Castle was actually really worth going to see - surrounded by a moat it looked pretty amazing! As you're walking towards the castle you have these violinists or accordion players all trying to ...

Vilnius, December 27, 2005 - Tuesday

Back in Vilnius, now in complete darkness, we decided to have a lunch first. We did it in one of those smaller shopping centres, not far away from Ruta's place, whose star feature was a large "Maxima" supermarket. However, within the centre there were a few extra things, among them a pizzeria. We found ourselves a seat, ordered a pizza each and in essence soaked up the warmth, seeking to kick the chill out of our bones. It was still rather ...

Capital of Lithuania

... modern cube patterns with trapdoors in the floor. The acting and the voices were well balanced with each other. In the end I was deeply disturbed, the crazy woman was euphoricly kissing the decapitated head of the poor prophet. The last day in town we gathered at the bowling alley with her Dad, Brother, and Brother's Girlfriend. One the first round I came out strong in the lead, the following ...

Vanderings in Vilnius

... huge palace-like buildings, most of them under reconstruction for when Vilnius is declared a European Capital of Culture in 2009, and what seemed like dozens of ornate cathedrals in various styles. Apparently they need all of the churches they can get though, since we came across no less than nine separate wedding parties, complete with brides in huge, cake-like wedding dresses. I don't know if it was a particularly significant day ...

... ham and cheese was our only option! We went to the Genocide Museum which was fascinating but more than a bit depressing. It was housed in the old KGB offices and still contained the listening devices, torture instruments, padded cells and execution chamber. Still in use up to 1991 when we were studying for our GCSEs. So after a cheery afternoon we needed a beer! We thought ...

... walked 1 k up the wrong street passing by all these dodgy people. It wasnt a good feeling to be lost round midnight in some dodgy independent area. The second day in Vilnius it rained and rained. We met up with a group of people from our hostel 4 Belgiums, who were heading to a castle in a town called Trakia. 2 spoke English, one spoke part english and the other just french. I being a naive australian didnt know that in belgium different areas spoke different languages. I thought ...
