    There are many refugees who live in this area as a result of the truce between Turkey and Greece in 1923. Thousands of Greeks living in Turkey were repatriated to Greece as were Turks sent back to Turkey who had been living in Greece. Thousands of these Greeks settled in Kavala and formed whole communities of refugees. This still seems fresh in the minds of the native Greeks.
