We are headed east!
Today we left Bakersfield. It was sad leaving my sister and her boys. We had a great time while we were with the Prendez family.... it was a great visit! Thank you Brian, Deb and Caleb for everything! We love you very much!

Day 2: Leaving Las Vegas
A late start but we got to Café Bellagio for breakfast. It would be lovely to have such fine dining experiences every morning, but I think we've taken care of the breakfast budget for the rest of the week. We race the Sun
... that is what I experienced. The one exception was the last 20 minutes of the climb, it was tougher than that portion of the hike down.
On the way up we are passed by two mule trains taking visitors down to Phantom ranch.
Watching the mules it is clear they are used to the trail and cruise along at a surprising speed.
They don't seem to be impacted by the weight of their riders and will be down ...
Southwestern Marvels
... that showed me a close up view of the unique southwest style. After a few more lookout stops through the painted desert, we crossed over the interstate and headed southward to the petrified forest section of the park.

The Parent Trap

It made for a fairly relaxing experience, spending some time walking around in the heat and seeing the sights then getting back into the air conditioning for a few minutes before getting out again.
