We returned to Milan, eased through immigration, picked up our car and headed north toward Germany. In Split in Croatia there had been an unfortunate and sad incident. Cath had bought me a nice little Liechtenstein pin. I had worn on my grey Kathmandu polar fleece, but somewhere in Split it came off and was lost. Boo hoo! However, as I realised …

This room will resonate in my memory forever as the last place I slept with my husband. The last time we made love was actually quite beautiful. Perhaps it was the ambiance of the hotel room, or perhaps the down feather comforter, or most likely because I was thinking of my new lover Adrian the whole while. Either way, this establishment is not …

... access to the West. Crowds of people demanding to travel to the west grew increasingly, and eventually it became too dangerous to try and fend them off. The walls came tumbling down several months later. Checkpoint Charlie was explained and viewed and other historical sites such as the spot where Hitler's underground bunker resided and where he reputedly committed suicide with cyanide pills, apparently a preferred method of suicide for many big name Nazis. The Brandenburg Gate ...

... wanted to do this trip was a tour to one of the Nazi Concentration camps. We were lucky enough to visit the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, which the Nazi's opened in 1936 as a model camp that housed bout 220,000 prisoners from gay, prisoners of war and of course Jews. From the outside it was made to look like a concentration but it really was more than just that. Over 100,000 died during the time of operation. The site now still has most of the buildings standing including ...

... as we'd need to get our 20kg bags down from racks above our heads, juggle coats and camera bags, avoid fellow passengers in our small cabin, and navigate the narrow main corridor in time to get off the train before it left the platform or become trapped by new passengers boarding! On the Gottingen - Berlin leg, we wanted to escape the confines of the private cabin and find some food in the luxurious space of the restaurant car. Here we sampled our first currywurst, a ...

30 years ago, being Jewish in Germany would have been extremely uncomfortable, but after staying in this hotel, my worries about gastapo bursting through the door were put to rest and I was able to get more than a decent night's sleep. The customer service was superb and I thoroughly enjoyed the lack of anti-Semitism. It's definitely on the top of my list to revisit.
