      Great Hotel

The hotel was in a great location really close to the underground and right down the street from Checkpoint Charlie. The staff was really helpful answering all my questions and offering advice. The internet is only free in the lobby area, which was a bit of a pain - but not a deal breaker. There is a supermarket directly across the street which is very convenient. The room itself had a very comfy bed and a small kitchenette. The TV and air conditioning worked very well. Would definitely stay here again!

30 years ago, being Jewish in Germany would have been extremely uncomfortable, but after staying in this hotel, my worries about gastapo bursting through the door were put to rest and I was able to get more than a decent night's sleep. The customer service was superb and I thoroughly enjoyed the lack of anti-Semitism. It's definitely on the top of my list to revisit.

I dropped off my luggage and hit the ground running. It was a beautiful sunny day (about 18 degrees) so you must take advantage of those when they are there. I grabbed my map and headed out toward Brandenburg Gate - iconic landmark of Berlin. To my delight there was some sort of festival going on. The streets were closed and turned into a …

We returned to Milan, eased through immigration, picked up our car and headed north toward Germany. In Split in Croatia there had been an unfortunate and sad incident. Cath had bought me a nice little Liechtenstein pin. I had worn on my grey Kathmandu polar fleece, but somewhere in Split it came off and was lost. Boo hoo! However, as I realised …

We proceeded to straddle the line - one foot in the east, one in the west - realizing once again that pieces of Berlin's turbulent history are still a part of the city. Walking south from here to Potsdamer Platz (a modern shopping & performance hub) we saw slabs of the wall that remain, covered in graffiti, ...

The afternoon objective is the Brandenberg Gate but guess who wrecks that plan too? Major subway stations are either closed completely or largely shut down and crawling with police. We get as far as Potsdamer Platz and it's shopping arcade. We lap up the cooler surroundings with a ...

... on this visit. Much work is being done at Museumsinsel (Museum Island) in an ambitious plan to link all the museums. The grand boulevard of Unter den Linten, which leads to the Brandenburg Gates, is also completely under construction because a new subway line is being built underneath it. Construction has also begun on rebuilding the enormous Berliner Stadtschloss (with a reported budget of 2 billion Euros).
