We returned to Milan, eased through immigration, picked up our car and headed north toward Germany. In Split in Croatia there had been an unfortunate and sad incident. Cath had bought me a nice little Liechtenstein pin. I had worn on my grey Kathmandu polar fleece, but somewhere in Split it came off and was lost. Boo hoo! However, as I realised …

This room will resonate in my memory forever as the last place I slept with my husband. The last time we made love was actually quite beautiful. Perhaps it was the ambiance of the hotel room, or perhaps the down feather comforter, or most likely because I was thinking of my new lover Adrian the whole while. Either way, this establishment is not …

... had previously thought that helmets were almost non-existent in this city, actually in most of Europe as a whole. But I have now realised that they must just be stored with the winter clothes. It is still manageable to cycle to school and back with the 6 plus layers of clothing that I am wearing.. Including an addition this week of Paul's waterproof track pants over my own pants (which have made an enormous difference) Wednesday was a big challenge however as ...

... going home we detoured to check it out. It feels strange to think that not that long ago Berlin was divided yet there is little evidence of the wall and division now. It must have been awful to be on the East side and not have the simple freedom of movement and see life moving on from behind a wall. Even worse of course for families divided.

As we walked back to the hotel - about 8 minutes it dawned on us that we had ...

... so I barely lasted five minutes at the top. I did not want to let go of the column. But I must say the view was amazing! Luckily Alli and Melissa captured photos while Hope and I headed back down the column, which may have been more frightening then walking up because I realized how steep the stairs actually were. It also made me nervous because Hope has no depth perception and she easily could have miscalculated her steps and have a major fall. Luckily we all made ...

30 years ago, being Jewish in Germany would have been extremely uncomfortable, but after staying in this hotel, my worries about gastapo bursting through the door were put to rest and I was able to get more than a decent night's sleep. The customer service was superb and I thoroughly enjoyed the lack of anti-Semitism. It's definitely on the top of my list to revisit.
