... MANY photos were taken and kilometres walked! We stayed right at the site in a hotel that was once the barracks for Hitler's escort. For 2 night's accommodation, including breakfast, we paid £41, (240 Polish Zlotych) about AUS $90 - bargain!

As well as the ruins of the complex, there was a display of military vehicles that you could pay to go for a ride in. The area was busy with people the whole time we were there. Tour buses stopped at regular intervals ...

... maximum of 24oC. It's a 5-10 min walk into town, so after breakfast we decide to enjoy the day and skip the shuttle bus.

It doesn’t take that long to visit all the sites in the old town which is quite compact but very clean and full of attractive buildings. Following an obligatory walk around the markets, I spy the Fat Cat Hotel that has all the local Svyturys beers on tap. The locals aren’t as good here with English but ...

... We leave Warsaw on Friday and travel to a campsite in the rural area of Ostroda. It is a family run business with the campsite on a lake that permits swimming and boating. We enjoy a swim in the lake and a cheap, tasty, traditional Polish meal in the ‘homecooked’ restaurant on site. Highly recommended is the barszcz soup – cold beetroot with boiled egg. Sounds odd, but is very tasty.

Kaliningrad used to be Königsberg and was the capital of Prussia (before German Unification in 1871). Post-WW2, the name was changed by the Soviets after it was annexed. Because of its location, bounded by Lithuania, Poland & the Baltic Sea, it was a closed state and was only
opened up to visitors about 20 years ago. Not surprisingly, there is still a very strong German influence here. ...
