Palace of Knossos and Aghios Nikolaos

... place. It was great to be back on Crete (my first visit was in 1984) because the island holds endless appeal: vestiges of Minoan civilization, which flourished on Crete some 3,000 to 4,000 years ago and is one of the most brilliant and amazing cultures the world has ever known, abound at Knossos and other archaeological sites around the island. Invaders and occupiers – Roman colonists, the Byzantines, Arab invaders, Venetian colonists, and ...

Get me outta here!

... next day and caught a cab back in to Chania. We then caught the bus back to Heraklion (or Iraklio) and the fun of finding somewhere to stay for our second night on Crete began.

P!ssing down with rain, no cagoules, no money, hungry, nowhere to stay - it was pretty rubbish. Crete is a pretty ****** place as well. Lots of graffiti around and dog poo on the footpaths. But, we managed to get another credit card working and then found an internet cafe ...

Platanes on a Sunday, A Monday and so on and on

... Jewish settlers brought in from Venice. The owner/waiter was a little rude, more intent on flirting with two middle aged blonde women of indeterminate origin, than serving us. The meal was fine though.

Our driving has improved – Chris navigates and Kevin drives in a much more relaxed manner than our earlier expeditions, negotiating the narrow, crowded streets even overtaking slower drivers on the motorway. A far cry from ...

The Prettiest Village in Western Crete

... Rethymnon including the Venetian port area. Lots of souvenir shops everywhere for the tourists and all selling the same things.

Argyroupoli is listed in one of the guides (DK maybe?) as the prettiest village in western Crete, and not far from Rethymnon, so we thought we would check it out – it’s certainly one of the more difficult villages to reach (and very lovely), but the prettiest? That ...

Crete for Beginners

... not. We were parked there for nearly three hours and no one bothered us except for a Scandinavian drunk, who looked like he did not know where he was – all he seemed to want was somewhere to lean before he flew away (or was denied travel). Their plane was late but we left the airport around 11.30pm and the drive back to Platanes went quickly, and without a hitch or a detour. Chris and Milly went to check out the nightlife and we went to bed.

The Last of the Samarians

... necessary as well, as the sun gets brutally hot in the gorge as the day gets later. Along the way, there were some cool curiousities such as abandoned settlements and ruined stone buildings. Apparently the Samaria Gorge was also a key place for refugees to escape to during the battle of Crete. We caught sight of a couple mountain goats, this breed being one that apparently only lives in Samaria Gorge. Another fixture of the hike was the donkey station ...

Rethmynos: a Foggy Bottom like experience

We ended up taking a bus to a town called Rethmynos to see this big old fortress with a mosque and a church within it, overlooking the water. It was interesting enough, but then we headed to the main part of town, which our "trusty" Lonely Planet had referred to as the second most charming city in Crete. I can only come to the conclusion that Crete is full of some **** cities. It was a weird ghost town full of ...
